Departmental Happenings

Back-to-School 2020

Greetings from the Department of Chicano & Latino Studies,

During these unprecedented times, you can imagine that Chicano & Latino Studies faculty and staff are working to support equity, inclusion, and social justice in their day-to-day activities. I share just a few examples.

In March, Lisa Sass Zaragoza, our community liaison, helped identify and share information about resources for Latinx students and communities, which we came to learn were the hardest impacted by the pandemic and the subsequent economic downturn.

Gabriela Spears-Rico participated in a conversation about monuments and memory with Mni Sota Indigenous scholars to discuss how our communities move forward to create public spaces that are more inclusive.

What does Social Justice and Change Look Like as a Latinx Community?

 Dr. Becky Martinez
Wednesday, October 7  | 5:00pm -6:15 pm CST
Location: Zoom

There is a beautiful complexity of identity as Latinx people that's both refreshing and challenging to discuss and navigate. Come ready to engage concepts of social justice and change related to who and where we are, and who and where we want to be as a Latinx community. This workshop will provide space for learning, connection, curiosity and support as Latinx people and an opportunity to just "be" as a community.   Thank you to the Dr. MLK Jr Program for organizing this webinar.
Check in with the MLK program office for more information and the link.
Community Happenings

Attorney General Keith Ellison and Chuck Rocha

The goal of this year's event is to discuss turning out the LatinX community for the election, building collective power, and how to use that collective power beyond the election. Keith always says that the election is just the beginning. We hope to connect LatinX leaders across the state to discuss with Chuck and Keith about strategies on how we can turn out the vote and learn from each other. Please RSVP by Wednesday, October 7 to Kate @ 515-520-7712.

  • Young Adults and COVID

The longer the COVID-19 pandemic goes on, the younger its victims get. A new study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that the median age of people with COVID 19 in the U.S. has declined over the spring and summer, with Americans in their 20s now accounting for more cases than people in any other age group. The findings suggest that if the U.S. wants to get its coronavirus outbreak under control, it will need more cooperation from young adults. 📸: Chandan Khanna / AFP / getty images
