The event will culminate in a round-table discussion about urban agriculture and how it can bring us together during this time of social uprisings and global health crises.

Tickets will include all materials necessary for this workshop, including your at home nursery container, hay, spray bottle & sawdust spawn. Full Circle Fungi is a Chicago-based cooperative growing mushrooms for fresh food, medicine, compost and sustainable food autonomy.

Learn how to cook Vegan Sancocho, a Chicago garden root veggie stew inspired by a traditional Puerto Rican style stew. Tickets will include produce and spices necessary for the cooking workshop, all sourced from local growers. Amor Y Sofrito is homemade Puerto Rican style food created in Pilsen, Chicago made with 100% vegan ingredients.

🎃 Celebrate : A Pumpkin Painting Session
Featuring Pilsen Arts & Community House
Chicago based artist, Kira Aguirre & Pilsen Arts & Community House will lead a pumpkin painting session where we will discuss the cultural significance of Dia de los Muertos. Tickets will include pumpkins & painting supplies. Pilsen Arts & Community House is a nonprofit focused on fostering relationships with artists & community members to provide Pilsen, Chicago with creative opportunity & continued growth.

Learn about how urban agriculture connects us all through a discussion led by members of the urban agriculture community, including Mekazin Alexander of EGMK, Dr. Saria Lofton of UIC, Selma Sims of Gardeneers & Johari Cole of Pemrboke Family Farming Association. Tickets to the event include specialty drinks provided by Apologue Liquors.

Dr. Saria Lofton, University of Illinois
Dr. Saria Lofton is a heath disparities nurse researcher committed to health promotion in Black communities, locally & internationally. Dr. Lofton's previous work has investigated urban agriculture in black communities through the lens of community gardeners & farmers throughout Chicago. Dr. Lofton currently seeks to build capacity for community-based food systems to improve access to healthy foods in underserved communities.

Johari Cole, Owner of Iyabo Farm
For over 25 years, Johari has dedicated her life to farming, improving food systems, and solving food access issues. Her advocacy has lead to the development of several ongoing Chicago farmers markets, national policies for local foods procurement, & organic farm research development. Johari currently works as a consultant for the Chicago Field Museum, US Fish & Wildlife Service & owns/operates Iyabo Farm in Pembroke, IL.

Selma Sims, Farm Manager at Gardeneers
Selma Sims is the Farm Manager for Gardeneers & manages their Homan Rails Farm in North Lawndale, where she teaches youth about biology, agriculture production, culinary and medicinal uses of food. Selma has a degree in Agronomy from Iowa State, focused on Urban Agroecology and Crop Production. She has 15 years of outdoor experience working with Urban Growers Collective & the Chicago Park District. Selma is also the Vice President of the Board of Directors at AUA.

Mekazin Alexander, Founder of EGMK
Mekazin Alexander is the founder of Earl's Garden, Mae's Kitchen (EGMK), a garden located in Englewood that works to empower residents with opportunities to create green lands and community space. Founded in 2013, Earl's Garden, Mae's Kitchen is named after the parents of founder Mekazin Alexander to reflect a vision of health & happiness.
