"The Student Advocacy Center has been such a great help during this pandemic. I really appreciate everything that is being done. My advocate has gone above and beyond. She has made herself available for me when I need someone to speak with concerning my son. I also appreciate the (parent support) Zoom meetings, they are very helpful during this time."

"I am a former educator, and someone who greatly enjoys working directly with young people. My experiences as a teacher highlighted the complicated backstories for the students who were labeled as difficult or problem children, and I always enjoyed working and forming relationships with those students. It is a privilege to be able to work more closely with students who have struggled and to help them to have better experiences in school, as an advocate at SAC."

Education Advocate, Ypsilanti

Lara
SAC Tutor who met with her SAC student outside, in masks, physically distanced, this summer.
"'Jimmie' has improved enormously in math and confidence. In math, he went from not being able to do basic addition like 2+3 to being able to do 3 digit subtraction with borrowing. When we first met, Jimmie hid under a blanket for most of the session and barely spoke. By the end, he was animatedly and confidently writing with chalk and telling me step by step how math problems should be solved.
I had an amazing time volunteering with SAC. It was so much fun to work with Jimmie: I really feel that he's an outstanding young man in terms of both academics and character. He just needed an opportunity to shine."

Matt Hamilton (with his lovely family)
SAC Supporter, Educator, Parent, Organizer
"I met Peri (SAC Executive Director) through a mutual friend when I was advocating for one of my students. She was so incredibly supportive and I felt like I had an immediate friend and partner in my work for educational justice.
As I continue to follow SAC, I’m inspired by the unwavering commitment to moving our community in the direction of justice, whatever it takes. I think this work matters now more than ever as we are called to radically reimagine systems and communities that center justice, collective care, and radical love.
I’m inspired and energized to know that SAC fosters and supports a community of folx who care deeply about education and about ensuring that all young people have access to equity and justice."

Our team kicked off this unusual school year with our very first SAC Olympics to build community, welcome new staff and interns, and have some fun. We wish we could have been all together, but we got creative with teams in Ypsilanti, Detroit area and virtual. We couldn't be more proud of this hard-working crew, supporting families through outdoor connects, text, calls, virtual school meetings and even video game connects!
