Dear Friend,
Seven weeks until election day!
Inaccurate Mailer Distributed by USPS
You may have received a mailer from the US Postal Service this week. Please ignore it! It is not accurate for Colorado voters.
Our Secretary of State, Jena Griswold, sued the USPS to stop distribution of these inaccurate mailers. With the help of our Attorney General Phil Weiser she obtained a temporary restraining order that required the USPS to stop delivering the mailers to Colorado voters. The judge stated that “The notice, if distributed, will sow confusion amongst voters by delivering a contradictory message.” To see a sample mailer and to read more about this issue, go to this article.
Unfortunately 75% of the mailings have already been or will shortly be delivered, making it hard for voters to know what to do. Here are the correct Colorado rules:
1. Every eligible Colorado voter will be mailed their ballot. You do NOT need to request a ballot. To make sure your ballot arrives properly, you should confirm that your residential and mailing address are correct at govotecolorado.gov.
2. You can, but do not have to, mail your ballot back. There are three ways to return your ballot: in person, at a ballot box or by mail. We recommend that you use a ballot box -- it costs nothing (it will cost $.70 or require 2 stamps to mail this year’s ballot), the drop ballot boxes are secure and well lit, and dropping your ballot in a box allows you to limit your contact with people during this pandemic. You can find the Eagle County ballot box locations and voter service center information here.
Please share the accurate voting information with your friends and family.
Another Colorado lawsuit against USPS
In addition to this new lawsuit, on August 18, 2020 Attorney General Phil Weiser joined other states in suing the USPS to demand that the USPS reverse earlier actions taken to slow down mail service. That lawsuit is still pending with a court hearing scheduled for September 22nd.
Volunteer to Help Get out the Vote
Voter misinformation like the USPS mailer can lead to reduced voter turnout. If you want to volunteer to help get out the vote (or to donate to organizations who are doing this) go to this page of our website for ideas.
Census
Please be sure to complete the Census https://2020census.gov/en.html. It is really important, and the sooner you complete it the better. The US Census Bureau officials recently announced that they would stop the census efforts on September 30th instead of the planned October 31st deadline. That decision has been contested, and there is currently a judicial restraining order prohibiting this shortening. More news is expected on that lawsuit later this week, but don’t wait -- complete the census now!
