Weekly Newsletter: Genetic Testing

Did you know that we offer comprehensive genetic testing for hereditary cancers?

We have partnered with a company called Invitae that provides comprehensive genetic testing and complementary genetic counseling.

Genetic testing can help you clarify your risk of certain cancers, such as breast, ovarian, or colon cancer. Most importantly, the results can change your medical care. You may need more frequent screening, different types of screening tests, or may even consider medications or surgeries that can reduce your risk of developing cancer. In addition, having the genetic test results can help with coverage for the extra tests and can help qualify you for clinical trials or research studies.

You should consider genetic testing if:

  • If you OR a close family member (mom, sister, etc) has been diagnosed with:
    • Breast, colorectal, or uterine cancer before age 50
    • More than one type of cancer
    • Cancer in paired organs (such as Breast and Uterine OR Ovarian Cancers)
    • Certain types of cancer at ANY age: ovarian, pancreatic, metastatic prostate, triple-negative breast cancer or male breast cancer
    • Breast or high-grade prostate cancer and Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry
    • 10+ colon polyps
  • If your family history unknown or limited

Invitae will bill the test to your insurance. If it is not covered, or the cost passed on to you is high, Invitae offers a max-$250 self-pay option.
