The Youth Mill turns virtual.

The month of September started on a very positive note for The Youth Mill with participants of the Beats of Culture program being invited to film a virtual Welcome to Country performance on Darwin’s East Point reserve. The Welcome to Country and performance are part of a two day conference with guests from all over the world. It was a wonderful experience for us all, that being 11 talented young people and 5 film crew. We are all proud of  the outcome and look forward to sharing the final cut. The exciting news is that we have now been commissioned to film another Welcome to Country performance and will be filming this coming Sunday at two amazing locations on the outskirts of Darwin.

Some of us spent an afternoon on the beach rehearsing before filming commenced, this was very much a time of sharing cultural knowledge and I felt honoured to be part of the group.

Upcoming Activities

Several of the participants are working on their original compositions which we will record in our humble BoC to Booth studio at Charles Darwin University. Our small studio and practice space is where I see the nurturing of some amazing individual and cultural  talent. We share many laughs and supportive conversations, for us it is a safe space of growth, support and creative development.

The BoC program is trialling  a virtual workshop and teaching program where we can collaborate with participants and tutors from remote communities and urban cities, we are hoping to develop an eclectic mix of sound, language  and knowledge sharing from not only different mobs but different cultures and genres of music. It is a trial program that we hope will have some extraordinary outcomes.
