Thank you to everyone who joined the last virtual Hopkins Hour live event on Thursday 17 September 2020 about 'New Technologies in Rehabilitation'.

Hosted by Positive Environments and Communities Research Stream and presented by, Research Fellows Dr David Painter and Dr Camila Shirota, from The Hopkins Centre, with invited guest speaker Mr Micah Ching from G.tec Neurotechnology Hong Kong Limited.

The research event focused on virtual reality (VR) immersive 3D spatial perception simulation and how it can be applied to access and improve cognition in spatial neglect following stroke, as well as other revolutionary stroke therapies that use brain computer interfaces. We also heard from Dr Shirota about recent developments in exoskeleton technology that brings science fiction, a little closer to everyday reality.

For those who missed the live event, you can view the video recording below, along with other accessible event resources on our website.

In honour of
World Architecture Day celebrated recently, Alison McDonald, Architect, Sustainability Consultant and Ambassador for The Hopkins Centre raised awareness for inclusive social sustainability, specifically the capacity of human-centred environments. Alison advised property-owners, and shared educational resources and insights on: cognitive-enriching architecture; Universal Design; LHA and SDA Design; Aged Care Design; and Healthy Buildings.

Australia-wide, from Adelaide to Cooktown, people booked online sessions to seek advice on how to make their projects more socially inclusive and sustainable. The most common concerns raised were regarding overall comfort performance paralleled with energy consumption; and futureproofing their dwelling for longevity of care in the home.

It was a successful event and demand was high, with Alison’s bookings spilling over to a waitlist. The Australian Institute of Architects and Renew Magazine plan to hold a repeat event in the future.

The Hopkins Centre Welcomes New Ambassadors

Our patron and ambassadors are passionate and strong advocates who actively promote and support our mission, research, events, and vision of the future in which dignity is a driving principle for all interactions that involve people with disabilities.

The Hopkins Centre HabITec flagship initiative is expanding its footprint after a busy period in responding to COVID-19. The HabITec Lab at Princess Alexandra Hospital, is accepting referrals to support people with their individual technology needs. Look out for the next demonstration sessions for rehabilitation and health professionals coming soon.

We are excited to announce that HabITec, along with award winning BEEhive neurosciences program, have joined forces in a new collaborative research and development Lab at Griffith University Nathan Campus. This is an exciting venture, working together in researching bold ideas and better solutions for people who have a lifelong disability. The Lab will build on knowledge generating through Hospital partnerships at PAH, Gold Coast and Logan Hospitals engaging people with disability, rehabilitation, and disability professionals as well as technology developers to solve key challenges.

Check out more details about the HabITec initiative, in our latest research brochure below, designing technology that redefines disability.

Congratulations to Dr Julia Bloom who recently received her PhD confirmation for her theses titled 'Early intervention vocational rehabilitation for people with newly-acquired spinal cord injuries'.

The research investigated consumers' experiences of the Back2Work Early Intervention Vocational Rehabilitation program for people with spinal cord injuries. The program aims to provide vocational support to participants within the inpatient rehabilitation setting. The findings underscored the benefits of the program in providing vocational support and also reaching beyond to inspire hopefulness and empower participants. By reinforcing the possibility of working and facilitating strong connections to work, early intervention vocational rehabilitation ultimately encourages return to work and supports autonomy during a time when it is challenged.

Well done Julia!
