September 2020

Dear Friends, Colleagues and Partners,

Despite the changed reality across the world, IBC 2020 occasioned the biggest and most exciting DRM event of the year. Under the overarching theme “DRM – Advanced Radio for All” the DRM Consortium shared virtually with participants from countries on all continents, the recent advances of DRM in various parts of the world (India, Indonesia, Pakistan, South Africa etc.) and the most recent improvements to the DRM performance, equipment and receivers (from Switzerland, India, China, South Korea, Germany, UK etc.).

Of great interest was the technical advancement by RFmondial and Nautel in making DRM for FM super-efficient and the simplification of the standard were also given a prominent platform on the 9th of September.

The receivers took a big part of the DRM lively presentation. A variety of receivers promoted by Gospell and Inntot, the tuk-tuk version of Starwaves and the SDR option of RF2Digital, as well as the new developments from Cambridge Consultants and the car options now available in India were introduced to the participants.

DRM used for emergency warning and education in receivers but also as public signage, the news site where the live DRM transmission can be monitored, were also part of an event standing under the sign of innovation and flexibility.

At the end of its virtual showcase, the DRM Consortium launched a new and attractive video that can be of help to any organisation or individual interested in learning and implementing DRM.

So do not miss the best of this event a few extra news (like the successful testing of DRM for FM and Emergency Warning in DRM in Jakarta) by going below, downloading the materials made available and asking questions that we will try to answer.

Your questions and our answers on all things DRM continue to come and can be seen now on our newly launched DRM website page.  More detailed answers can also be found in the latest version (5) of our DRM Handbook, which brings updates and improvements for all those interested in understanding and implementing DRM in their country.

Please do not hesitate to send us DRM questions (with names and pictures for publication in the newsletter).

And for all those listening to the DRM transmissions please make sure that you check and send us your feedback on the new schedules published on www.drm.org.

Please help us make this newsletter richer, better, more complete by submitting your ideas, questions and suggestions.

DRM Showcase Held Successfully During Virtual IBC

For more than ten years a lot of the DRM key members, supporters and digital radio enthusiasts were ready to make their trip to Amsterdam for the IBC convention. In 2020, however, the continued health crisis has forced all industry players to adjust their plans and come up with other ways to creatively bring their peers together. The solution for the DRM Consortium was, like for many others, to organize a virtual showcase. The Digital Radio Mondiale event “DRM - Advanced Radio for All,” took place Sept. 9th, during the “IBC Showcase.” The two-hour online presentation provided an insight into recent DRM developments taking place around the world, as well as a peek at new dedicated products.

DRM Adopted by Pakistan

Among the highlights of the DRM Showcase was also the presentation from the public Pakistani broadcaster, PBC, which confirmed that the country has adopted DRM for all the bands (both AM and FM).

At the beginning of the month the Chairman of the Pakistani Senate Standing Committee on Information and Broadcasting, Senator Faisal Javed Khan, highly appreciated Radio Pakistan’s activity, considering it a real national asset. During the meeting of the committee held at the PBC headquarters, Secretary of Information, Akbar Hussain Durrani, informed the Committee that a comprehensive three-phase plan costing over ten billion rupees is at the final stages of consideration as its aim is to introduce Digital Radio Migration (DRM) Policy, thus expanding Radio Pakistan’s coverage to strategic destinations with quality broadcast.

In this context here is the PBC presentation made during the DRM Showcase given by PBC.

DRM System Specification Updates Completed

The DRM Technical Committee has completed its work on reviewing and updating the DRM system specification, ETSI ES 201 980.  The changes, which are backwards compatible, will make DRM's implementation in chipsets and receivers more reliable, and add additional support for receiver text displays to be able to support different scripts from around the world.

For members of the DRM Consortium, a special version of the document is available that highlights all the changes compared to the published standard.  This Consortium-internal document can be requested from the DRM Project Office.  The ETSI approval process will begin shortly and publication of the new version is expected early in 2021.
