STUDENT REP APPLICATIONS NOW CLOSED
Thank you to all 21 students who submitted their applications to the PTSA to become student reps.  Applications closed on the 14th.  We will review the applications and will contact students directly via their school email.  It was awesome to receive and read the applicants ideas for getting through this unprecedented time!

AMAZON WISH LISTS
In trying to find new ways to support our staff in this world of virtual learning, we set up an Amazon wish list especially for them.  On it, you will find items that really reflect the needs of a new kind of teaching environment, including things like blue-blocking glasses and home-office organization items.  A lot of teachers, just like our students and many of our parents, are struggling to create a productive and comfortable environment for them to work from at home.  There are also items on the list for their 'roaming snack cart' for those still in the building and coffee stations.  There are gift cards that will be awarded to the chosen Patriot of the Month or gift cards you can purchase in any amount & for any teacher. whether they are on the list or not.

I set up the list with the school shipping address, so please double check the address when making a purchase.  If it accidentally comes to my personal address, I will surely deliver it!  Also, if you search for a teacher's last name on this list, any items they've requested, if any, will come up.  I've added their names in the comments attached to each item so you'll know who requested the item.  I know at this point we long for the days of lugging in large tubs of Clorox Wipes and Tissues on the first day of school. . .but until we can happily return to that kind of teacher wish list. . .we can still support our deserving staff with this kind.  Thank you, in advance, for your kind support & thank you to all who have already done so!  I'm new to this school and the quick and generous responses to anything we've requested so far just blows me away!

Seniors and College Recommendations:

Asking for a recommendation from your counselor? Use this Brag Sheet: https://bit.ly/32Jz1iE
Helpful Hint: The more information, specific examples, etc. that you provide; the more detailed your recommendation will be. It is called a Brag Sheet for a reason, don’t be afraid to let yourself shine.
Please note: When asking your counselor for a letter of recommendation and/or requesting a common app recommendation please allow 2 weeks to process your request. So, if you are currently applying for Early Action or Early Decision, reach out to your counselors to request that information so that you have plenty of time before the registration deadlines.

Writing your College Essay:

Hear from our own AFHS counselor, Mr. Lane, regarding writing your college essay: https://youtu.be/_u4pG5f_k8c
Join the Davidson College Admission Staff and other admission professionals this fall for a workshops series to help prepare you for the college search and application process-wherever you choose to apply.  Sessions will cover topics ranging from essay writing to interview preparation to making the most of virtual college visits.  All workshops are free, but space is limited in some sessions.  View the full schedule and register here.

#BeThe1To
Ask the tough question
When somebody you know is in emotional pain, ask them directly: “Are you thinking about killing yourself?”

#BeThe1To
Keep Them Safe
Is your friend thinking about suicide? Ask if they’ve thought about how they would do it and separate them from anything they could use to hurt themselves.

#BeThe1To
Be There
If your friend is thinking about suicide,
Listen to their reasons for feeling hopeless and in pain.
Listen with compassion and empathy and without dismissing or judging.

#BeThe1To
Help Them Connect
Help your friend connect to a support system, whether it’s 800-273- TALK(8255), family, friends, clergy, coaches, co-workers or therapists, so they have a network to reach out to for help.

#BeThe1To
Follow Up
Check in with the person you care about on a regular basis. Making contact with a friend in the days and weeks after a crisis can make a difference in keeping them alive.
And thank you to all of our sponsors....
