Hello from Orono Public Library!

Although we are currently closed to the public, we invite our members to explore our resources in this newsletter to stay engaged, informed, and entertained.

Library Update

In an effort to protect the health of our patrons and staff, the Orono Public Library building remains closed to the public until further notice.
Library staff is in the building conducting curbside pickups, assisting patrons via phone and email, handling interlibrary loan requests and deliveries, maintaining the collection, providing online programming, and more! The book drop is open for returned items. Items are quarantined for four days before being checked in, so you may notice something you returned on Monday still on your account on Thursday. They will be checked in! And no fines will accrue during this time.

Check out our Curbside Pickup service to request and safely pick up books, audiobooks, magazines, CDs and DVDs from our collection or from any library in the Minerva system.

A Word from the Library Staff

At the Orono Public Library, we are committed to staying in touch with our patrons. We are social beings, and we will remain so throughout our temporary closure.  The library offers a plethora of online resources to keep you engaged, informed and entertained; and the staff is available by email and phone to give you the help you need during this difficult time.  If you would like to ask a question, if your library card has expired, or if someone you know needs a new library card to access digital services, please email: library@orono.org

We will be utilizing Facebook streaming and Zoom to offer story times, virtual programming and up-to-date information about our services. Stay well, and we miss everyone!

Thanks for using our Curbside Pickup service!
Due to its popularity, we have added additional time slots on Saturdays!

Currently, this service is offered Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, utilizing the 4 unit locker system that is situated outside the library’s front door.  Helpful information about the service:

  • Using this service is easy, just visit our website for step by step instructions on requesting items and scheduling a curbside pickup appointment.

  • Items are not limited to books! Our DVDs, audiobooks and magazines - including new issues - are available for request. Interlibrary loaning from other libraries is now available, as well.

  • For our patrons who miss browsing our stacks, we have added the service BookSite to our homepage. Now you can browse featured titles organized by categories; in the linked lists, there is the option to search our catalog for availability. We also have other new features: Staff Recommendations and a Materials Request Service, for those who know what they like, but are unsure what they want next.

  • Friendly tips regarding your requested items:

  1. You’ve received an email notification that your book is ready to be picked up - if your notice does not include a link to schedule a pickup, go to our website’s Curbside Pickup page to schedule your appointment.

  2. Your hold will stay on the shelf for 14 days, giving you sufficient time to schedule a curbside pickup. If you need more time, please contact us.

  3. Returned items are quarantined for 96 hours. After that time, items will be checked in, removing them from your account.

  4. Deliveries of interlibrary loaned items are quarantined for 96 hours. After that time, items will be checked in, generating a notice that your item is ready for curbside pickup.

  5. You only need to schedule one appointment for the day, as all your items will be gathered together for your pickup. You can also include items for family members - just let us know in the note field when you schedule an appointment.

  6. Emails with locker number and pin code will be sent by noon on the day of your appointment.

  7. A 5:00PM appointment on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday lasts until 10:00AM the following day. A 3:00PM appointment on Saturday lasts until 10:00AM Monday.

  8. Book drop is open 24/7 (so you can return items on the sly…)

Story Time is back! Watch Miss Morgan every Thursday at 11:00 AM for stories, songs, rhymes, and more. Videos will premiere on Facebook and stay up after they go live, so you can join in the fun at your convenience! For preschoolers, toddlers, and babies.
Watch Miss Morgan's first Story Time here!
As we continue to fine-tune our Curbside Pickup service, one thing that's become apparent is our patrons miss browsing the stacks. We miss it too! So we figured out the next best thing: we here at the library can choose your items for you. Access the Materials Request Form at this link and let us curate your next trip to the library (via Curbside Pickup).
