Consultation Draft of Labor's National Platform
The Consultation Draft of Labor's Platform was released by the National Policy Forum (NPF) last Monday. In an email to ALP members, National President Wayne Swan invited members to make submissions to the National Policy Forum. However, in NSW, we only received the same email invitation from Wayne Swan today.
Submissions can be made by individual members as well as by Branches, the deadline being the 30 November, 2020.

Labor for Refugee groups across Australia, are currently meeting to decide which refugee policies should be prioritised in our submission to the NPF. After each L4R group meets, we will develop a national position which will then be publicised to our members and supporters.
When our submission paper is released, hopefully by end of this month latest, we seek your support and urge you to make your own submission, endorsing our L4R position. Some Branches are also holding meetings, so you could also seek the support of your Branch members to endorse the key issues L4R has identified, which we believe must be included in Labor's National Platform.

Prohibiting Items in Immigration Detention - Update
Senator Kristina Keneally today issued an update on this Bill.
She informed us that the Government has not listed the Migration Amendment (Prohibiting Items in Immigration Detention Facilities) Bill 2020 in the Senate for the upcoming sitting week.
Whilst the Government is in control of the legislative agenda, this is an indicator the Bill will not be bought on for debate.
Senator Keneally highlighted that following this upcoming week, the Senate is not scheduled to sit until November due to Senate Estimates taking place at the end of the month.
Since Senator Keneally wrote to the Government on 30 August 2020 outlining Labor's concerns with the legislation, Labor is yet to receive a response.
Senator Keneally stated "As we have always said, after nearly three years – the Morrison Government are still unable to clearly articulate why these laws are required.
It beggars belief that the Acting Immigration Minister fails to tell the truth that existing laws allow authorities to remove devices if they are being used for criminal purposes".
#Game Over
Craig Foster, former Socceroo and human rights advocate, is the face of the Amnesty International #Game Over campaign.
A part of the #GameOver campaign is about engaging with the sporting community and inspiring them to join Amnesty in taking action. With this partnership, they are confident that Scott Morrison and the Government will take notice.
As we approach the #GameOver National Day of Action on Wednesday, October 28th, it’s important we build as much support as possible.

Human rights impact is possible! Just last month, after more than 7 years trapped in detention, Papi and his family boarded a plane for resettlement in the United States. What a huge win! If we can keep up the pressure, we can ensure everyone gets to safety.
Amnesty has also provided a letter template as a guide for you to reach out to sporting clubs, as well as an open letter signed by #GameOver ambassadors such as Liz Ellis and Ian Chappell. Don’t be afraid to give your letter a personal touch. Using your own words to describe your involvement in the #GameOver campaign is very powerful.
Toolkit: Sporting Clubs
This is the toolkit you can provide sporting clubs with so that they know how they can get involved.
These resources will give sporting clubs a rich background to the #GameOver campaign and highlight why it’s so important they take action. Within this Toolkit, sports clubs will find direct ways they can participate in the #GameOver campaign, and they’ll get access to a template letter that they can send to their local MP.
Imagine how great it would be if hundreds of sporting clubs around Australia were contacting their Federal members asking them to call #GameOver?
