Your update for October 2020

Welcome to your monthly update of local NHS news and opportunities to help shape health services in Sheffield. If you have any comments or queries, please feel free to email us.
Prescription Ordering Service

A small number of GP Practices in Sheffield currently have a telephone prescription ordering service run by a trained team of NHS staff. It is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 3pm, and allows patients to call and order their repeat medication.

With the patient’s consent, staff look at the patient’s medication record, take a list of the medicines needed, and send the request for the prescription to the doctor electronically. The patient’s doctor issues the prescription and it is made ready for collection within 2 working days or dispensing by the patient’s pharmacy of choice within 4 working days as normal.

The prescription order line is one of a number of ways that patients can order their medicines from their doctor. The service has its own dedicated telephone number which patients use instead of their GP practice's number to order their medicines.

NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group is considering making this service available to all GP Practices and their patients in Sheffield. We would like to hear what you think about the way you currently get your repeat medication, and a new city-wide telephone prescription ordering service.

The survey is live until 1 November 2020

Could you be our next Lay Member?

We have two opportunities for experienced, independent Lay Members to join NHS Sheffield CCG’s governing body to commence in post in January 2021. Local individuals with strong links to public and patient engagement are sought.

As a member of the CCG Governing body, Lay Members are key individuals in the team that ensure the CCG exercises its functions effectively, efficiently, economically, with good governance and in accordance with the terms of the CCG’s constitution. In taking decisions as part of the Governing Body, they help ensure that:

  • the interests of patients and the community remain at the heart of discussions and decisions
  • the CCG commissions the highest quality services, maintaining a consistent focus on quality, integration and innovation
  • decisions are taken with regard to securing the best use of the public money
  • the CCG, secures health services that are provided to our local population in a way which promotes the NHS Constitution, improves individuals’ health and wellbeing, supports them to keep mentally and physically well, to get better when they are ill and, when the individual cannot fully recover, to stay as well as they can to the end of their lives
  • the CCG is responsive to the views of local people and promotes self-care and shared decision-making in all aspects of its business; and
  • good governance remains central at all times.
These roles will carry a remuneration of circa £13,000 for approximately 3 days per month, although this may be increased following review.

Protect your loved ones. Get the app

The NHS COVID-19 app launched last week and we are encouraging everyone who can to download and start using the app straight away. It's free to download, and is the fastest way to see if you're at risk from coronavirus. The faster you know, the quicker you can alert and protect your loved ones and community.

It is part of the NHS Test and Trace service and has a number of tools to protect people, including contact tracing, local area alerts and venue check-in.

Celebrating Black History Month

Black History Month is an annual celebration of the contribution that individuals from the Black African and Caribbean communities have made locally, nationally, and internationally.

The CCG is celebrating Black History Month for the first time. We will be sharing something new each day, to celebrate the history, achievements and contributions made by individuals in healthcare, arts, sports, academia and volunteering, throughout history and during this pandemic.

'Just' the Flu?

There’s no ‘just’ about it. In an average year, the flu virus kills 11,000 people and hospitalises thousands more. If you have a long-term health condition it can cause serious complications.

The flu vaccine is the best protection for you and those around you. That’s why it’s FREE to those most at risk.

Adult Social Care review

The review will help improve adult social care in Sheffield. We want to make sure Sheffield is a city for all ages, where everyone can get the right support to help them live the kind of life they want to live.

We want to hear from as many people as possible, and want local people to help design how things will look in the future.

Carers consultation

Sheffield City Council wants to talk with people of any age who are unpaid carers for someone living in Sheffield.

A carer is anyone, including children and adults, who looks after a family member, partner or friend who needs help because of their physical or mental illness, frailty, disability,  or an addiction and who could not cope without their support. Carers are unpaid and should not be confused with care workers who get paid to provide help.

They want your thoughts and comments on the Carer principles. Please join a zoom session or get in touch to request a questionnaire or further information.

To find out more email using the link below or call Emma Dickinson on 07584 386707 or Frazer Kirk on 07717 713694.
