Welcome to The Highland Bookshop Newsletter
Please forward on to your friends!
Hello everyone and welcome to all of our new subscribers! We've had a small avalanche of new sign ups this month and we do hope you enjoy hearing our news...

In retail, Christmas seems to start earlier and earlier each year and Christmas 2020 is no exception. The festive season is fully underway on the High Street and we are lucky in Fort William to have so many brilliant independent shops to choose from. We think it is safe to say that all of us are committed to making this festive season as cheery as we possibly can, despite the terrible circumstances so many are facing, and you choosing to shop local if you can is very, very much appreciated.

In the glorious, pre-Covid days of old we had a full and varied events calendar that kept us very busy. Needless to say we've been missing our author talks and the fun of getting everyone together so we've decided it is about time we dipped our toes into the world of digital events. Read on for more on this and some of the fantastic books we are excited about this month.

We hope to see you soon!

Festive Gift Wrapping
Every year we offer a Gift Wrapping service and this year is no different! We have sourced gorgeous paper bows & labels, lots of string and have made our packages (almost) plastic-free. We'll be charging a wee bit more (£1.50 per book) but we are donating 100% of that £1.50 to our friends at Lochaber Foodbank who work tirelessly to combat poverty and hunger in the local area.

To learn more about their work and how you can help then head over to the Lochaber Foodbank website
Our First Ever Online Event

The Unremembered Places with Patrick Baker

Thursday the 19th of November at 7pm

Some of you may remember we had Patrick booked in for an event way back in June around the launch of The Unremembered Places.

We hope to have him for a real life event (remember those?) next year but we have decided we simply can't wait that long to hear from him. So, in an effort to bring The Highland Bookshop into the digital age, we are teaming up with our very good friends at Birlinn Books to bring you a live Facebook interview.

Have you read the book? Do you have any questions you'd like Patrick to answer? Reply to this email before the 16th of November and we will pass them all along!

This is an online Facebook event!

New & Upcoming Releases

Sarah-Lou is loving...

Troy
By: Stephen Fry
(Hardcover £20)

I loved Mythos and Heroes and couldn't wait to get my hands on this! It is sure to be another smash hit for Stephen Fry who retells this classic story in his inimitable style.

I never get tired of tales of Greek mythology. Previous favourites include The Silence of the Girls by Pat Barker and Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller.
Kelsey is excited to read...

Magic Lessons
by Alice Hoffman
(Hardcover £16.99)

I've just recently finished Practical Magic and loved Rules of Magic a few years back. Magic Lessons is about Maria Owens and how she becomes the legend she is. Hoffman's writing is rich, warm and inviting with beautiful people.

I can't wait to find out more about this illusive character!

Alice's top Autumn read...

Ghosts
by Dolly Alderton
(Hardcover £14.99)

I've been looking forward to reading this since hearing Dolly talk about the writing process on her podcast and having enjoyed her memoir Everything I Know about Love. Ghosts follows Nina as she enters her 30's and struggles with internet dating, the decampment of her friends to the suburbs, and her father's descent into dementia. Alderton is known for her thoughtful but humorous writing and I am excited to see how this comes across in her debut novel.

Highland Bookshop Reviews

Dresden: The Fire and the Darkness
by Sinclair McKay

This book explores the events of and surrounding the bombing of the city of Dresden during WWII.
The narrative style adds drive and pace to an already frantic and terrifying story without losing heart or becoming some sort of grizzly schlock. His use of first hand accounts create palpable tension...
