>> EuroMarine third 2020 Steering Committee meeting, 14 October 2020, Online
The EuroMarine Steering Committee will be holding a remote meeting on October 14th to make final decisions regarding the preparation of the 2021 (online or hybrid) General Assembly meeting and the final selection for funding of proposals submitted under the EuroMarine 2020 call for proposalsUpdates to this meeting will be posted here.


>> EuroMarine 2021 General Assembly, 26-27 January 2021, Online
Due to the Covid 19 sanitary crisis and given that restrictions might bear on international travel at the beginning of 2021, the 2021 General Assembly meeting of EuroMarine will be held online. Sessions will either be spread over two days (26-27 Jan. 2021) or grouped on a single day. Updates and further details will continue to be posted to the 2021 GA page.


>> Call for Applications to Join OYSTER in 2021
The EuroMarine early career researcher group OYSTER is looking for enthusiastic, engaged and creative early career scientists who are willing to play an important role in advocating EuroMarine and promoting the role and relevance of marine science and the ocean in general. Further details on the call are available here.

>> Call for Volunteer EuroMarine Mentors
EuroMarine's early career researchers group OYSTER is still seeking further EuroMarine members to volunteer as mentors for the new OYSTER Mentorship Programme, which is to launch in January 2021. Further details on the programme are available here.


>> Preannouncement: OYSTER survey 2020 for Early Career Researchers, from 7 October 2021
On Wednesday 7 October 2021 OYSTER will be launching a survey to gain insight into the details of how Covid-19 has affected early career researchers (ECRs) in institutions across Europe. The survey will help to better understand the full impact of the virus on this important demographic within the research community and identify potential ways for universities and institutions to better help ECRs through the pandemic. This survey will be launched on the website and through a special issue of the newsletter.

Sea Tech Week 12, 12-16 October 2020, online


EurOcean has announced that registrations are open for their 12th Sea Tech Week conference which this year will be held virtually. The theme of this year's conference is Observation: from seabed to space and will feature 30 exhibitors, 35 sessions and 200 B2B, poster and press hall sessions.

ASSEMBLE Plus conference 2021, 18-29 January 2021, online


The first ASSEMBLE Plus conference will take place virtually, between 18 and 29 January 2021. The conference, “ASSEMBLE 2021 - Marine biological research at the frontier”, will showcase recent developments in marine biology and ecology, state-of-the-art technologies available at marine stations and institutes, how to access biological resources and marine research infrastructure, how to improve services provided by marine stations, and the impact of the services provided on industry and society.

International conference on Time Series and Forecasting (ITISE 2021), 7-9 August 2021, Gran Canaria (Spain)


The 7th edition of the International conference on Time Series and Forecasting (ITISE 2021), which will take place in Gran Canaria (Spain) in April 7th-9th, 2021. ITISE 2021 seeks to provide a discussion forum for scientists, engineers, educators and students about the latest ideas and realizations in the foundations, theory, models and applications for interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research encompassing disciplines of computer science, mathematics, statistics, forecaster, econometric, etc. in the field of time series analysis and forecasting.

The European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet) is currently looking for individuals to complete a survey on the network's website. EMODnet is preparing for the next phase where access to all thematic data and data products will be centralised and with further expansion of the data catalogue.

PhD opportunity in Optical characterization and robotic monitoring of biogenic carbon particles in the epi- and mesopelagic ocean, Ugent (Belgium)


Ghent University are seeking PhD candidates for a joint project between Ghent University and VLIZ, studying the Optical characterization and robotic monitoring of biogenic carbon particles in the epi- and mesopelagic ocean. Candidates should have a good understanding of optical measurement systems and a strong interest in marine sciences.

Human Health and the Ocean Symposium to go hybrid


The Symposium will still take place in Monaco in December, but from Wednesday the 2nd to Thursday the 3rd, with scientific sessions running during the afternoon. All participants will be able to join the sessions on site, but also online through the website, live from the meeting room. Registration fees have been waived.

Policy brief: Sustaining China's coastal resources: Recommendations to improve the state of the coasts in Hainan


Germany's Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT) has published a policy brief  “Sustaining China's coastal resources: Recommendations to improve the state of the coasts in Hainan”. The brief explores the human impact on the coast of Hainan, summarising the major findings of a long-term Sino-German research collaborative.

Innovative method allows to quantify scientific capacity building in marine studies


An innovative study, with authors from EuroMarine member organisation Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies (CESAM) of the University of Aveiro (UA), has been published in the renowned magazine Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). The paper describes how the authors compiled and analyzed a database of scientific peer-reviewed publications over a period of 50 y (1965 to 2015) relevant to capacity-building in global marine natural product discovery.

My Ocean tool provides interactive ocean data map


The Copernicus Marine Service have launched a new tool which allows users to discover the ocean and its many different facets. Users can interact with and explore the ocean's blue (physical), green (biogeochemical), and white (sea ice) variables with this tool.
