Back to Church: Staying Safe and Well

As we mentioned last week we have carefully mapped out appropriately distanced seating, and while we are allowed to have 50 people for in-person worship (the latest provincial announcement does not apply to churches) St. Luke's can safely seat 35-40, depending on how those are registered are "bubbled".

At the time of writing this newsletter, we have 23 registered, so you can still register by filling out this
form. Please feel free to be in touch with Rev. Victoria if you have questions.

Today's Music

Prelude:   Prelude on ‘Strengthen for Service’  (Johann Gottfried Walther)
Hymn:  Strengthen for Service
Postlude:   Carillon de Longpont  (Louis Vierne)

Johann Gottfried Walther (1684-1748) was more than just a contemporary of J. S. Bach: they were cousins and Bach was godfather to Johann Walther’s son! Walter’s Chorale Prelude on ‘Ach Gott under Herr’ (the name of the hymn tune for Strengthen for Service) features the melody in canon between the tenor and bass voices.

The melody of the hymn tune Ach Gott und Herr first appeared in Neu-Leipziger Gesangbuch in 1682.  Bach made two harmonizations of it. The text is a metrical paraphrase of a prayer that occurs in the Liturgy of Malabar used by Christians in South India. The hymnist John Mason Neale translated it in 1859, and it was revised by Percy Dearmer for the 1906 English Hymnal.

October 8th marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Louis Vierne—organist of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris from 1900 until his death at the organ during a recital at Notre Dame in 1937.
Published in 1914, 24 pièces de style libre were composed for organ or harmonium.  No. 21 in the collection, Carillon is based on a theme sounded by the carillon in Longpont Castle in Aisne, France.  Vierne was regularly invited to Longpont in August.   On hearing the four church bells on the August 15, 1913, he was inspired to write the Carillon de Longpont.  It was later dedicated to his brother René, killed on May 29, 1918, not far from Longpont.

A Liturgy of the Word with Lectio divina

Wednesdays at 11 a.m. on Zoom

Please note that we will continue to meet on Zoom on Wednesdays in September, even as we move into the AMBER phase and return to in person worship with restrictions and safety measures and procedures in place. Please check this space each week for updates and additional information.

Please email Rev. Victoria for the order of service, Zoom link, or if you have any questions.

People often think of Christian morality as a kind of bargain in which God says, ‘If you keep a lot of rules, I’ll reward you, and if you don’t, I’ll do other things.’ I do not think that this is the best way of looking at it. I would much rather say that every time you make a choice, you are turning the central part of you, the part of you that chooses, into something a little different from what it was before. And taking your life as a whole, with all your innumerable choices, all your life long you are slowly turning this central thing either into a heavenly creature or into a hellish creature.
