Loreto Highlights Update - 2nd October 2020
Music
This week the children have been learning about body percussion.  We have spent some time listening and appraising different types of body percussion routines and experimenting with different sounds and techniques. We will soon be starting a 3-week project, which will see the children develop their body percussion techniques whilst improvising and composing.
Our introduction sessions this week have been very successful and great fun!
We have two Body Percussion achievement awards which go to Theo from Mrs Allan’s class and Poppy from Miss Gmiterek’s class.
Have a look at their performances.

Faith Diary
This week we have said special prayers in class to our Guardian Angels and all classes have listened to the story of how St. Michael protected the Loreto Convent in York.  Lets hope we can return to our traditional Procession to St. Michael next year.
Cook Books
Children in class 5L have learnt about desktop publishing to write their own revolting recipes inspired by Mrs Pratchett’s liquorice bootlaces. These cook books have been based on the book Boy by Roald Dahl.
Online Safety Bulletin
This week we would like to give parents and carers information regarding the Social Media app TikTok.  This updated guide will help support you understand the application, highlighting the privacy settings, age restrictions, parental controls and things you should be aware of.
Do you know what apps your child has on their devices and what the age restrictions for these apps are?
Learning to write by writing
Foundation Stage 2 have been learning to read and write some high frequency words with great success!

They have also learnt to write their own names and have enjoyed lots of other literacy activities.
Christmas Is Coming!
We are delighted to invite all parents to participate in this year's Christmas artwork.  Last year over 30 children designed their artwork to have professionally printed on Christmas Cards, tags and more.
If you would like you child at Loreto to participate then please read the letter here for more details on how to register.

and Lauren Lally (Year 2).
Iceberg Ahead
This week pupils have been looking at solids and liquids.  The children have been investigating how a solid can transform into liquid.  The children have looked at how the mass can change properties in different environments.  Here Javier and Maximo are investigating how the ice cube melts in the palm of the hand, noting what they experienced as part of this experiment.

The 'star of the week' children were presented with their gold pencils and certificates.  Let's see who is in next weeks gold book!
Peer Reading
Our LSSC members read our new books to Year 3 this week. Thanks to books donated by Prof Tilbury, children of all ages are now able to learn about sustainability and the importance of looking after our planet. They were read stories about an Orangutan, a red bicycle and even learnt an Earthdance!  We hope to continue this initiative in the weeks to come.
Ancient Egypt
As part of Year Four's history topic on Ancient Egypt, the children have been learning all about the River Nile and the important landmarks alongside it. They drew the story of how Tutankhamen's tomb was discovered. Miss Caruana's class have created a display to show off their excellent work.
Traffic Free Tuesdays
We started our walks on Tuesday this week, in conjunction with #trafficfreetuesday. We continue to do this to raise awareness about air pollution and traffic in Gibraltar as well as the many health benefits that walking brings. We would like to thank the RGP, who escorted us from the frontier, making sure it was a safe walk for all.  We will continue with this every Tuesday but also urge others to try and walk to school more often to help raise the awareness of pollution and traffic on our roads. A special mention to Miss Grech and Miss McNally, who walked from Europa Point to school several times this week.
Parents: please look for an email from school regarding Nasal Flu Vaccinations for children.  This is a free Government initiative and we urge you to read the information.  Check the letter bank on our website.
