Public health updates
CONTINUE TO STAY SAFE: As cases of coronavirus continue to increase across Westminster, and with cold and flu season fast approaching, it’s vital we all continue to take all steps necessary to stay safe and healthy. The easiest way to protect yourself and your loved ones is to remember these basic measures:
  • wash your hands regularly for 20 seconds
  • wear your face covering in enclosed spaces
  • keep a two-metre distance from people you do not live with

If you have symptoms of coronavirus, you must stay at home and book a coronavirus test through the NHS or by calling NHS 119.

TRANSLATED APP GUIDANCE: The NHS COVID-19 app is a vital way to see if you’re at risk from the virus. You can find out more about the app here.

We also have video and audio clips with information about NHS COVID-19 app in other languages, including: Arabic (audio), Arabic (video), Tigrinya, Farsi, Bengali, Sylheti and Kurdish (Sorani).

COLD OR COVID? It can be difficult to explain the coronavirus pandemic to younger children, especially when the symptoms share many similarities with the common cold or flu. A good story can always help and luckily we’ve got just thing! Forget bedtime stories with Tom Hardy, here’s Michaela from Church Street Library reading Charile’s Runny Nose, a delightful tale that should help put any little ones’ worries to rest…
For help or advice if you or your child are unwell, please contact your GP, ring 111 or visit the NHS website. For advice on taking a temperature, click here.
CORONAVIRUS TESTING UNITS: Tomorrow, Saturday 3 October, between 10.30am and 3.30pm, a coronavirus testing site will be located in the car park at the northern end of Paddington Recreational Ground, just off Carlton Vale. Use postcode: NW6 5EP to locate.

Silver Sunday volunteers packing tea boxes for the elderly

SILVER SUNDAY TEA BOXES: Westminster Connects volunteers have delivered 1,000 tea boxes to older people, as part of this year’s Silver Sunday. They packed tea bags, scones, pots of jam and other treats into tea boxes donated by the Sir Simon Milton Foundation.

Volunteer Shana McCaffrey said: “During these times, it can be lonely for those isolating or shielding. So, it feels nice to do something good for the local community.”

Rosie Cunningham (pictured here) was one of the elderly residents who received a tea box. She said: “It’s nice to be thought about. I’m a big fan of Silver Sunday, and we are very cared for as pensioners in Westminster.”

BLACK HISTORY MONTH COMMUNITY HEROES: To celebrate the start of Black History Month we’ve honouring Black History Month Community Heroes, recognising the contribution of local heroes and the difference within their communities.

Trish John (pictured above) lives and works in Church Street, Westminster and was nominated by her colleague Stella Hales. Stella says:

“Trish has an amazing way of connecting with the community. She welcomes anyone visiting the Church Street Regeneration Office with the brightest smile and goes out of her way to help those in need. During the pandemic, Trish volunteered to do grocery shopping and collect prescriptions for vulnerable residents. We applaud Trish for serving Westminster residents with a glad heart and grace.”

You can read more stories of community heroes at our Black History Month site.
