The Island Within

"Taking good care of our bodies, eating well but not too much, sleeping, and drinking water, we have to trust the power of understanding, healing, and loving within us. It is our refuge. If we lose our faith and confidence in it, we lose everything. Instead of panicking or giving ourselves up to despair, we practice mindful breathing and put our trust in the healing power within us. We call this the island within ourselves in which we can take refuge. It is an island of peace, confidence, solidity, love, and freedom. Be that island for yourself. You don’t have to look elsewhere."

Thay's 94th Continuation Day

On Sunday, October 11th our teacher, Thich Nhat Hanh will celebrate his 94th birthday, (or Continuation Day as birthdays are called in this tradition). We will mark the occasion when we gather virtually for our weekly meeting on the 11th. Thay has been living at Từ Hiếu Temple in Vietnam for 2 years, and the monks and nuns of Plum Village recently shared an update about his health on the Plum Village website: read it here
Practice of Awakening

"Where I live in Plum Village, every time you meet someone on your way somewhere, you join your palms and bow to him or to her with respect, because you know that there is a Buddha inside that person. Even if that person isn’t looking or acting like a Buddha, the capacity for love and compassion is in him or her. If you know how to bow with respect and freshness, you can help the Buddha in him or her to come out. To join your palms and bow like this isn’t mere ritual. It’s a practice of awakening."

--Thich Nhat Hanh, The Art of Communicating
Our sangha has two teams helping to share leadership and facilitation of our meetings. Our Bell Minders Team are mindful facilitators for our weekly gatherings, as well as retreats, taking beautiful care of our friends in the practice including the bell. Our Sangha Care Team facilitates sangha care meetings, plans retreats, minds our library and resources, and coordinates outreach. If you are interested in helping with either or both, contact interbeingkingston@gmail.com for more information.
