October Research & Technology Updates
The Division of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) office of Research & Technology has several updates to share for the month of October.
Cyber AwARe Month
Cybersecurity Awareness Month – observed every October – was created as a collaborative effort between government and industry to ensure everyone has the resources they need to stay safer and more secure online. To celebrate, we are excited to offer the following two events: the Cyber AwARe Poster Contest for students and the Cyber AwARe Summit trainings for teachers.

Free Cyber Training for IT Staff
In partnership with the Forge Institute, the DESE will host 8 cyber training sessions for all district and school technology staff beginning October 15, 2020 at 9:30 a.m. Each session is 1-2 hours in length, virtual, and at no cost to the district. Technology professionals completing all 8 of the cyber training sessions will receive special recognition of completion.

For more information, check out Commissioner's Memo RT-21-012.
dataQuest for Principals
The dataQUEST PLC is a statewide network of principals who meet monthly to explore innovative practices by watching and discussing video interviews featuring local administrators. This month's topic is "Assessment for Learning" and highlights how schools are meeting students' needs beyond academics.

Fayetteville principal Chris Sputo shares how Leverett Elementary incorporates social emotional learning into their daily curriculum. Dusty Meek, principal of Clarendon High School, shares how his school creates individualized plans for student success. Participants will have opportunities to learn from each other during breakout groups and ask questions of the featured speakers.

Our next virtual meeting will be October 14 at 9:00 a.m. Join the conversation by registering today at https://bit.ly/dataQUEST.
Social Media Awareness Campaign
DESE Research & Technology has released new SMACtalk content on the topic of Online Etiquette! Visit smactalk.info each month to download parent-friendly posters, listen to the SMACtalk for Teachers podcast, find videos and games for your students, and access additional resources from the Social Media Awareness Campaign. We were honored to be featured in a segment on KATV Channel 7 recently, and you can watch the video here.

The Arkansas Attorney General's office has also agreed to partner with SMACtalk by aligning future trainings with our monthly topics. Keep an eye on their training page to register for the next webinar, "Cyber Safety: Developing Healthy Virtual Relationships," planned for October 21.
