Sydney Moo Duk Kwan

Term 4 [2020]

Greetings all,

Term 4 will once again be a busy time in the SMDK dojang; we have three members preparing for their Cho Dan (black belt) assessments and the worldwide online event for the Moo Duk Kwan 75th Anniversary. Details for both events are below.

Although much of our training has returned to normal, classes will maintain in their current format for the remainder of 2020.

  • Youth: 6:15pm - 7:10pm
  • Adult: 7:15pm - 8:15pm

Yours in the Moo Duk Kwan,
Kim Wyles

If you follow any Moo Duk Kwan social media accounts you will no doubt have seen the promotional material for the up-coming 75th Anniversary celebrations. This year marks 75 years since the Moo Duk Kwan was established by Kwan Jang Nim Hwang Kee. While the planned celebrations in Korea have been postponed, in their place members from around the world will be coming together online for a series of events over a four day period.

For us in Australia, the event kicks-off on Saturday 7 November. The schedule of seminars is as follows (times in AEST):

Seminar 1: Saturday 12 noon - Opening ceremony with Kwan Jang Nim HC Hwang
Seminar 2: Saturday 2pm - Training seminar with Lee, SBN (Korea)
Seminar 3: Saturday 11pm - Training seminar with Salinas SBN (Spain)
Seminar 4: Sunday 5am - Training seminar with Guzman SBN (Mexico)
Seminar 5: Sunday 7am - Training seminar with Kenyon SBN (USA)
Seminar 6: Tuesday 10am - Closing ceremony with Kwan Jang Nim HC Hwang

All members are invited to take part. The opening and closing seminars are free, while the four training seminars require registration and a small fee.

Dan Shim Sa

Over the last few months Millie, Kira and Mangala have been busy preparing for their Cho Dan Shim Sa; a process that will culminate with the 10-hour Dan Assessment Day on 31 October followed by their formal testing on 21 November.

The Dan Assessment Day is a tradition unique to SMDK, and one that has been inspired by the Dan Assessment process which all students of Michael Austin SBN go through. We hold on to this tradition as part of our connection and lineage through Austin SBN. The up-coming Dan Assessment Day will be the third in SMDK's short history and all members are invited to attend to watch and support, or participate and train alongside the candidates. A detailed schedule for these events will be provided closer to the day.

Dan Assessment Day
Saturday 31 October
7am to 5pm
10 hours of training.

Dan Shim Sa

The Dan Shim Sa is a Regional event overseen by Paul Adamson SBN, our Regional Examiner. Because of the current travel and social distancing restrictions, SMDK will host the Sydney portion of the Region 3 Dan Shim Sa at the SMDK dojang. This event will be open to friends and family to watch, however numbers will be restricted.

A reminder: Training with social distancing

While NSW is making progress in the fight against COVID-19, social distancing within the dojang remains a necessity, and will likely stay in place until the end of 2020. Please continue to observe the following restrictions to assist with meeting our social distancing requirements:

  • A strict limit of 10 people in the hall during class.
  • Please remain outside the main hall when preparing for class.
  • Please use the iPad to sign in for each class.
  • Hand sanitiser will be available at all times at entry to the hall.
  • No partner work and please observe a minimum of 1.5m distancing between students.
  • If you’re unwell or have been in contact with someone unwell, please refrain from attending class.
  • If you test positive for COVID-19, please contact me as soon as possible.
