The Kennel Club set up a Neurology Development Group early in 2020, to look at the development of health schemes for breeds that can suffer from a number of conditions. The project started with work on the IVDD scheme for Dachshunds which has been in operation since the end of 2016. The group includes specialists in neurology as well as representatives from the KC and BVA. Look out for the launch of the KC-backed Dachshund Screening Programme.

Think globally, act locally
The International Partnership For Dogs has published an article (and done a Press Release) entitled: Reframing Current Challenges Around Pedigree Dogs: A Call for Respectful Dialogue, Collaboration and Collective Actions.
The aim is to encourage open and respectful dialogue, collective and collaborative actions, and a global perspective on issues affecting the health and welfare of dogs, including the impact of human dog interactions, the culture of dogs, legislative approaches, and emerging challenges. |

Diagnosing IVDD
It's really important that your dog gets the right diagnosis, quickly. In a survey among Dachshund owners on our Facebook Group, only half the IVDD cases were correctly diagnosed by their general practice vet on first presentation. A quarter of vets incorrectly diagnosed the problem, for example saying it was muscle pain, arthritis or a stomach problem. Some dogs have presented with anal gland problems which the vet may empty but the underlying pain, due to IVDD, remains. A further quarter of vets were unsure about the symptoms at first examination.
 We've added a new page on "Other Diagnoses" on our IVDD website to help you and your vet understand when an IVDD diagnosis is most likely.

Survey of dog breeding practices
Last year, the National Veterinary School of Alfort (Ecole Nationale Vétérinaire d’Alfort) conducted a study of strategies used by French dog breeders to determine appropriate breeding time and address peripartum and postpartum maternal stress. This study also included breeders’ observations of maternal care and interactions between mothers and offspring.
In a new survey, they want to include international dog breeders to improve the representativeness of data collected in the previous study and allow for comparison of specific national breeding practices.
