What is the Recfishing forum?

The Forum on Recreational Fisheries and Aquatic Environment has been established to help the MEPs understand what can be complex issues affecting 25 million EU angling constituents. The European Parliament deals with important legislation which has a direct impact on fish stocks and the aquatic environment.

Biodiversity and hydropower: a Green Deal for migratory fish?

Co-chaired by MEP Carmen Avram and MEP Michal Wiezik

The Biodiversity Strategy adopted in May 2020 and its implementation will be crucial to reverse the negative trends in aquatic biodiversity loss. At the same time, the pressure of hydropower dams on Europe’s rivers is immense and keeps growing every year, with more than 20,000 existing plants and more than 8,000 additional ones being planned. Dams and hydropower plants are identified as one of the major threats to aquatic biodiversity, because of their well-documented impact on water ecosystems.

The event will discuss the Biodiversity Strategy roll-out and action plan in relation to European rivers, the implementation and enforcement of the Water Framework Directive, the impact of hydropower on European rivers, and the removal of dams.

All the alarm bells are ringing:
migratory freshwater fish near collapsing

Migratory freshwater fish species have experienced a worrying decline over the last 50 years, says the Living Planet Index. Investigations carried out by the World Fish Migration Foundation (WFMF), Zoological Society of London (ZSL), International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), WWF and The Nature Conservancy (TNC) showed that freshwater migratory fish species declined by 76% on average since 1970. In Europe, it even falls faster, with a decline of 93% on average.

The recent WWF’s Living Planet Report 2020 also found that wildlife populations found in freshwater habitats have suffered a decline of 84%.

The full implementation and enforcement of the EU Water Framework Directive remains essential in order to stop and reverse these dramatic trends.

How can angling contribute to the recovery of the EU tourism sector? Report of the event

Before the summer break, the RecFishing Forum hosted its first webinar on angling tourism, co-chaired by MEP Niclas Herbst and MEP Grace O’Sullivan. Panellists and more than 50 participants discussed the potential of angling tourism for a green recovery of the sector.

The need for better data on recreational fisheries was also recalled by several participants. The event was the occasion to present several examples of angling tourism projects such as Sea Trout Funen in Denmark, highlighting the compatibility between tourism activities and environment protection and restoration.

Introducing... The Danish Sportfishing Association

This article is part of a series dedicated to the presentation of angling associations across Europe. For this edition, we introduce the EAA member from Denmark: Danmarks Sportsfiskerforbund – The Danish Sportfishing Association.

Danmarks Sportsfiskerforbund represents the interests of 121 angling clubs active across Denmark. It gathers about 18,800 members from a truly ‘angling nation’ as around 10.3% of the Danish population goes fishing at least once a year.

The association summarised its strategy for the upcoming years in a document untitled ‘Strategy 2020-2025’. Danmarks Sportsfiskerforbund strives for sustainable recreational fishing by working for healthy fish stocks, environment protection and more wild fish stocks. To do so, the association wants anglers’ voice to be heard in the making of fishing legislation but also supports initiatives from its members which are keen to directly become actors for change.

The Commission published its proposal for 2021 Baltic Sea quotas

On 28 August, the European Commission published its proposal for next year’s fishing opportunities in the Baltic Sea. The proposal covers several species including:

  • Western Baltic cod (-11% compared to 2020 TACs);

  • Eastern Baltic cod (-70%);

  • Herring (-36% in the Central Baltic Sea; -50% in the Western Baltic Sea; same fishing opportunities in the Gulf of Bothnia; -15% in the Gulf of Riga); and

  • Salmon (-10% in the Gulf of Finland; +9% in the main basin).

Baltic salmon and Baltic cod are two species of interest for recreational anglers. The European Anglers Alliance (EAA) is closely looking into the proposal and striving for sustainable management of fisheries and healthy fish stocks, including as part of its participation in the Baltic Sea Advisory Council. As in previous years, EAA supports the complete closure for the Eastern Baltic stock, including for recreational fisheries. However, for salmon, EAA considers that a more conservative approach would be needed for the main basin.

The Council will examine the Commission’s proposal at its ministerial meeting scheduled on 19-20 October.
