Cullman County Highlights

October 2020

Office Updates

Dear Folks,
I hope and pray this newsletter finds you all well.  Things are starting to get back to normal a little bit but we are still not holding face to face events.  However, the Cullman County Extension office stands ready to help you in any way we can.  Our office maintains regular business hours of 8:00am -4:30pm Monday through Friday.  Although our face to face meetings have been discontinued for the time being we have more learning opportunities than ever, but of course they are online.  This newsletter provides you a list of many opportunities and I hope you will check them out.
Tony Glover, County Extension Coordinator

Plans are underway for next year's Master Gardener Class, scheduled to begin January 27, 2020.  Hopefully, we will meet face-to-face; however, if current health concerns prevail, virtual classes may be a necessity.  Prospective participants will be notified when a decision is made.  Please contact our office at (256) 737-9386 if you are interested in attending.

Timber Sale Methods

Thinking of fall and winter often brings to mind the satisfaction of cooler weather, football Saturdays, or a day spent in the woods. However, late fall and winter is also a great time for landowners to conduct a timber sale, as cold and wet conditions often fetch higher prices for some products (most often pine and hardwood pulpwood). Also during this time of year, landowners with naturally dry soils or tracts located near roads will likely have an easier time selling timber, especially when buyers are looking for wood sources during wet winters.. Read More

4-H Clubs Update

Cullman County 4-H members just finished up the August project, “Tea Towel Apron.”  Although 4-H Clubs were not allowed to meet in person, over 30 kids across the county participated!  September's project was a small footstool designed to introduce participants to some basic woodworking skills.  These are due the 5th of October and will be judged the following week.  Project winners will be notified by phone or email.

October's newsletter was distribututed to city & county elementary schools.  In-school club meetings will be held as permitted by the school systems and in accordance with Auburn University protocols.  Community Club meetings have not been scheduled, but participants willl be notified when that occurs.  The safety of our 4-H'ers, volunteer leaders, and employees are our top priority.

4-H Livestock & Animal shows will be held during the Cullman County Fair.  See the
Calender of Events for dates & times.

And the winners are........

Participants in the Apron contest were encouraged to use their creativity in constructing their apron from the kit provided.  Senior level winner, Zoe Lynch, had judges scratching their heads to figure out how she made her apron.  The kit provided one tea towel that would adequately cover a younger child, but Zoe wanted to make hers longer.  After not finding the exact towel at any local stores, she found them online and convinced her mom to order them.  Congratulations to Zoe for her skillful sewing and detective skills!
