Last week, Russ Muse taught us from James 1:19-26. We often read this passage from the viewpoint of relationships (quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger) and while that is helpful (especially in the days we live in) James is actually continuing to lead us through the anatomy of a trial.

He has already introduced the idea of joy through trials, by asking God for wisdom to see the trial from His perspective.

Building on that, he encourages us to be:
  • Quick to hear: it is important to listen well to God as we progress through a trial. What is he saying to us? What is he teaching us?
  • Slow to speak: our human nature tends to want to strategize our way out of a trial, to perhaps talk it through making plans, etc. While it's helpful to get counsel and talk with trusted friends, we should not rush to "solve" a trial.
  • Slow to anger: James encourages us to look in the mirror to examine ourselves.  Are we harboring anger toward God and/or others because of this trial? Anger often arises when we feel there is an obstacle to what WE want.  Anger does not accomplish God's purposes in our lives.

Approaching trials in this way helps us grow joy in the midst of them, and be effective doers of God's word, not just hearers.
James: What's Next?
