The Savvy Ally
A Guide for Becoming a Skilled LGBTQ+ Advocate
with Jeannie Gainsburg

Monday, October 19  7pm on Zoom

Join us for a discussion with Jeannie Gainsburg, the author of a new guidebook for being an ally to the LGBTQ+ communities. She will talk about her inspiration for writing the book, share some common LGBTQ+ etiquette bloopers to avoid, and offer some savvy ally tips for us to take out into the world.

Jeannie is an educational trainer and consultant in the field of LGBTQ+ inclusion and effective allyship (and Columbia High School alum!)
The annual Maplewood-South Orange Book Festival returns with a month-long slate of virtual author talks. Here, festival founder Robert Lasner talks to Melissa Kopecky and Larry Pettracaro about what he has planned on SOMAtv's Books in Action.
Behind the Scenes
with Shanize Haddock

I love working at the library. When I first started, I worked behind the scenes, processing books (adding labels, appropriate stickers and covering the books). That job was really fun, because I like doing stuff with my hands -- but the best part was I got to see all the new books! Over time, I started to do many more things like working upstairs in the adult department and working with Ms. Kopecky. Now I work mostly in the children’s department where I do many different things, including satisfying my need for a pet (I get to feed the library fish)!

While the library building was closed I worked on all kinds of projects from organizing our photo collection to planning and filming Crafting with Shanize – which you can find on our YouTube channel.

One of my favorite things about being open again is getting to interact with all my coworkers and library patrons who I’ve really missed. But my all-time favorite thing since being back is getting up in the morning and choosing a nice outfit for work (pajamas got boring after a while!)

South Orange loves its Library!
In just two months, thanks to the generosity of the South Orange community, we are halfway to our $10,000 goal for the SOPL Friends 2020 Fundraising Campaign.

Please donate, and thank you!

Join the Coalition Youth Collective and the South Orange/Maplewood Community to re-affirm that Black Lives DO Matter in SOMA as we listen to the voices, applaud the talents and support the aspirations of SOMA and Essex County youth during this virtual AND interactive celebration.

To ensure a secure and uninterrupted event, we ask that you register here before October 4th and your personal link and password will be emailed to you.
