Fruit trees and bears in the Jasper townsite - a message from Parks Canada

Not sure what to do with all your fruit crop?
  • As summer comes to an end, and harvest season approaches, this is a reminder to Jasper townsite property leaseholders, of the importance of securing all wildlife attractants. This includes picking fruit from trees.
  • Autumn is upon us, and bears will be searching Jasper National Park’s valley bottoms for food to fatten themselves up before winter. Make sure to remove anything on your property that might attract a hungry bear, including compost, recycling, garbage, fruit or berries growing in your yard or garden, and even bird feeders.
  • If you see a bear in the townsite, or suspect that a bear has been on your property, call Parks Canada Dispatch immediately at 780-852-6155.
  • Reporting quickly allows us to respond quickly and prevent habits from forming. Timely reporting is essential for Parks Canada staff to be able to manage and change behaviours early.
  • When bears get an easy meal from fruit trees or garbage in town, they can quickly learn to return for food. As they become more complacent, the chance of a negative encounter with humans increases.
The best ways to ensure that wild and wary bears stay out of the townsite are:
  • removing fruit trees from your property, or collecting all the fruit as fall approaches
  • securing garbage properly
  • reporting quickly when you see or suspect a bear has been near
Don’t know what to do with your harvested fruit? Here are some options:
  • Ask the Jasper Fruit Share or Jasper Local Food Society for assistance in managing and using your fruit. Contact them through their Facebook pages, or call Jasper Local Food Society at 343-363-3964.
  • Participate in the September 26th Apple Festival, promoted by Jasper Local Food Society. More information is available from Marissa Kidd, President, Jasper Local Food Society: jasperlocalfood@gmail.com or 343-363-3964.
  • Arrange to have your fruit trees removed. Parks Canada is offering assistance in the removal of fruit trees. Call or text Steve Malcolm at 780-852-8523. Priorities are all species of pin cherry, chokecherry, crab apple, and mountain ash.
Information

Canada Post continues to see significantly increased parcel volumes as Canadians adopt different shopping behaviours during COVID-19.
  • Given the high volumes and the important safety measures in place throughout the network to protect Canadians and  their employees, including physical distancing, they are adding one day to their standard delivery dates, as of September 21, 2020. As well, the on-time guarantee remains suspended.
  • While they have adjusted their delivery standards to manage expectations, they remain committed to providing timely and reliable service. However, given the unpredictability of the COVID-19 situation, delivery standards remain subject to change.  These links will help you find the answer to your immediate questions.
