Trouble Logging in to Libby or Overdrive?

A little background. First, library user accounts are deleted from our system after a period of inactivity. If there have been no check outs of physical materials on an account in more than three years, that account is removed from our system. Second, we recently changed how Overdrive checks that the user account  information is valid. Previously, it checked to see if the number matched our card number pattern only. This meant that accounts that were expired, had pending charges, or long overdue items were still able to log in and read digital materials. Now, Overdrive checks against our records to make sure that the account really exists and that there are no problems on the account.

If you are having trouble logging in to check out ebooks and audiobooks, it may be that there is a problem with your account or your account has been deleted from our system. Visit any library branch to see which is the case. If your account has been deleted from our system, we will need to issue you a new library card with a new number. You will need a photo ID and proof of address (if it’s different from what is listed on your ID).

We know that you may have items currently checked out or on hold through your old card number. The library is able to merge your two accounts so that all past Overdrive activity, including active holds, are moved to your new account. Be sure to mention holds on your old account to the librarian assisting you. If you know your old card number, please bring that along.

Thanks for your patience as we adjust to this new process of verification. Happy e-reading!

The Tale Trail, located along the Stream Bottom Trail at the Swiss Valley Nature Center is up! You can walk from the parking lot to the old school house and read Children Make Terrible Pets by Peter Brown.  This book will be on display for three months before we replace it with a winter title. Thanks to Dubuque County Conservation and the McDonough Foundation for their support of the project!

Friends of Libraries Week

Celebrate National Friends of Libraries Week, October 18-24. The Friends of the Dubuque County Library District is a 501(c)3 nonprofit volunteer advocacy organization which supports the mission of the library. Voter Information

If you’re planning to participate in the upcoming election, there are a few tools that can help your experience run smoothly.

The Iowa Secretary of State’s website is your best resource for finding information about your registration status, absentee ballot status, and how to vote. Visit to request an absentee ballotcheck your voter registration status and get registered, track your absentee ballot and find your precinct/polling place.

Absentee Ballot Requests: Your mailbox has likely been inundated with absentee ballot request forms. Absentee ballots cannot be mailed out in the State of Iowa until October 5. Check your mail carefully after that date if you have requested an absentee ballot. The deadline to request a ballot by mail from your county auditor is 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 24. Return your ballot by mail or dropping it off at the courthouse by 9:00 pm on November 2—the day before the election. If voting by mail, leave time for delivery. Your ballot must be postmarked November 2 or earlier, and be received within one week of the election to be counted.

Voting in person: You can vote in person as early as October 5th by visiting the Dubuque County Courthouse or the Elections Annex at 75 Locust Street in Dubuque and voting absentee in person. You will be issued an absentee ballot which must be completed  at the voting location-- it may not be taken home  Bring a valid ID or your voter registration card. Remember, you can also register to vote on Election Day with a valid photo ID and proof of residence. If you do not have an ID, you can vote provisionally and have until noon on Monday the day after the election to show your ID.

If you have questions about voting, check the Dubuque County Elections website, Secretary of State’s website, or call the library and we will try to answer your election questions.
