These are unprecedented times, and we greatly appreciate the commitment of all of our generous supporters in responding to community needs around the state as we meet the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic and the devastating wildfires across our state.

The Bush Barn Art Center facility remains closed due to the pandemic, but SAA is still operating, providing the community with virtual art resources, getting art supplies out to underserved youth, and pivoting major art events to successful virtual events. Staff have developed innovative ways to offer quality arts learning and services through flexible delivery methods while ensuring the safety of the people we serve.
Virtual Salem Art Fair and Festival
Pivoting to Reach the Community:

As an arts organization, we see the devastating impact on artists when their livelihoods are suddenly stopped. To this end, for nine days in July, SAA produced the first-ever Virtual Art Fair that offered an online platform for 126 participating artists in an effort to serve artists in a way that is most meaningful for them at this time – sales.

"I think you guys did an incredible job putting together the virtual art fair this year. I have been working on developing a similar project for Art In The Pearl in Portland, and I hope to be able to have half of what you guys made happen here. Great job!!! "  David Friedman, Artist
The Galleries have also been busy and early on put out a series called ‘Art in the Everyday’. Gallery staff also produced artist’s interviews and presentations posted to Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. In the early fall, the Galleries received a Covid-19 assistance grant from the City of Salem to develop a virtual marketplace for SAA-represented artists. Work is just beginning, and we expect this to be up and running early November.

Over the summer, the Community Arts Education program distributed 750 Art Packets to kids from underrepresented communities while developing a host of online art resources and videos for kids. To address school closures and to aid classroom teachers teaching remotely, the Artists in the Schools program is adapting its delivery methods to include a menu of offerings, ranging from onsite to virtual to hybrid that supports core curriculum.

SAA collaborates with the Bush House Museum on the Arts & History Immersion Program for Title I 4th-grade students. This has also been adapted to include student art kits and a virtual tour of the Museum to ensure they can continue to engage in their community’s cultural resources. One teacher commented: “I love it. Great ways to engage students at home showing them they can always invite the outside world in their virtual environments. Thank you.”
Due to the generosity of all of our Covid-19 relief supporters, SAA can continue its active work in meeting the needs of our community at a time when they need us most.

We know that art has the power to elicit the best in all of us and that art has the power to unite us in action.
