CLASSIX was created by Awoye Timpo to expand the classical canon through an exploration of dramatic works by Black writers. CLASSIX defines these classic works as plays by authors of African descent from around the world that speak profoundly to the times in which they were written and resonate deeply with our own.

CLASSIX engages artists, historians, students, professors, producers and audiences to launch these plays into the public imagination and spark productions worldwide.

Panelists:

In this week's Play Lab, MFA candidate Jamie Rubenstein will guide you through a writing exercise that will culminate with a new scene of a play. You will have the opportunity to share your work and receive feedback in an encouraging setting. At the end, you will leave with pages of a new scene as well as a technique that you can use any time to generate material and add texture to your writing. This workshop is open to all experience levels, including writers with a regular practice, those trying it for the first time, and everyone in between. Anyone seeking to experiment with new material in a supportive, warm environment is welcome.

ABOUT JAMIE RUBENSTEIN
After dedicating ten years to teaching middle and high school English, Jamie is making a career shift to focus on playwriting. So far, her plays include Sam Inc. (The Bechdel Group), Sophomore (Finalist, Trustus Theater Playwrights Festival), Circe (Skeleton Rep), and Saturn Return (Jimmy’s No. 43), all of which were developed at Primary Stages.

As a teacher, she served as English department coordinator, directed musicals, oversaw the literary magazine, coached speech and debate, and extended the high school Shakespeare performance program to the middle school.

She has an MA in English from Middlebury’s Bread Loaf School of English, where she performed with the Bread Loaf Acting Ensemble, and a BA in English from Barnard College. Jamie also writes essays and fiction, sings, plays ukulele, runs a twelve-minute mile, and keeps an active watercolor sketchbook.

When Theatre Can’t Exist, These Young Artists
Swap the Stage for Science-Fiction

Theatre alumni Gamal ElSawah, Conrado Falco III, and Sajda Waite—Co-Founders of the Showdogs NYC Theater Collective—were primed and ready to debut their first full-length original show. Then a pandemic came, theatre productions were cancelled, and everyone went into isolation.

The question on everyone’s minds was: could theatre survive — and if it couldn’t, what would become of theatre artists? The Showdogs put their heads together and decided to do something they’d never done before: make a TV Show. In just a few short months, Wormholes was born.

A science-fiction comedy series, Wormholes follows starving poet, Salman Saeed (ElSawah), and social media influencer, Bayleaf Calvaire (Waite), living together in a New York City apartment with an active interdimensional wormhole in their closet. Every week, the wormhole brings about new, wacky, otherworldly phenomena that get in the way of their sad, Zillennial lives.

Click here to watch the trailer.

The  first  two  episodes  of Wormholes  will  premiere  October  14th,  2020,  on  Instagram  TV @wormholes.tv  and  on  the  Showdogs  NYC  Youtube  channel.

Each semester, a portion of your Student Activity Fee (SAF) is set aside to cover projects that are created by and presented for Hunter students. The goal is to provide opportunities for students to create or explore ideas in dance, film, music and theatre. The Spring 2020 student production of Lear (pictured above), received funding from an SAF Grant.

The Performing Arts Office is now accepting applications from students for performing arts projects for Fall 2020 and Spring 2021. Application are due by September 30th at 12pm.
