Children's Prayer for Advent

My little Lord Jesus, I love you and thank you for this Advent season.
Please help me to understand all that You have done for me.
Your loving mother held You in her heart and brought You into this world. Help me to do the same.

My loving Jesus, I choose You, this Advent, as my King and my God.
Draw me close to You and help me to see my sins
so that I can change the things that You want me to change.

Mother Mary, pray for me this Advent so that I may do all that God wants me to do.
You said "Yes' to all that God asked of you. Please pray for me that I may do the same.

Come, Lord Jesus! Come, Lord Jesus!Come, Lord Jesus, come!
I love you, Jesus. Amen.

Celebrating the December Feasts of Our Lady

The month of December brings many opportunities to honor Mary in special ways! Celebrate the following feast days:

December 8 - Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Solemnity)
With Our Lady's Immaculate Conception, God was, even before Mary's birth, putting into motion his plan of salvation for the world. It is the beginning of the fulfillment of God's promise for us. It takes place during the Advent Season, a time of waiting.

December 10 - Our Lady of Loreto
In October, 2019, Pope Francis declared this new feast to “help all people, especially families, youth and religious to imitate the virtues of the perfect disciple of the Gospel, the Virgin Mother, who, in conceiving the head of the church also accepted us as her own.”

December 12 - Our Lady of Guadalupe
The image of Our Lady of Guadalupe continues to evangelize Latin America. Learn more about this feast in the "Saint of the Month" section!

December 25 - Nativity of the Lord (Christmas)
Mary said "Yes!" to giving birth to the Son of God. Mary trusted God, and knew he would be with her every step along the way. She teaches us to have faith and courage.

December 27 - The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph
Mary, as the Mother of God, becomes our mother. It is in the family that we first come to understand and experience community and our faith. Our parents nurture our faith, leading us to Mary, and through Mary to Jesus.
Highlighting High School RE Curriculum

The Revelation of Jesus Christ in Scripture

Objectives 9 and 10

For those catechists following the Youth Ministry Curriculum offered by the Archdiocese of Dubuque, we continue with Theme #1, "The Revelation of Jesus Christ in Scripture." This theme focuses on questions such as:
  • Who is God? How is God present in your life?
  • What is the Bible? How did it come to be? How do we use it?
Participants should develop a recognition of who God is, appreciate the way God reveals Himself in their lives, and encounter the Living Word through a deeper understanding of the Sacred Scripture and Tradition.

Objectives 9 and 10 invite us to:
  • Discover the role of the Bible in the Liturgy (Mass).
  • Appreciate the importance of studying/praying with the Bible.

Saint of the Month

St. Juan Diego - December 9
Patron Saint of Indigenous People

Every morning, Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin, whose name means “the talking eagle,” would walk fifteen miles to daily Mass. One morning as Juan passed by a large hill named Tepeyac, he heard some beautiful music and a woman’s voice said, “Juan! Little Juan Diego!” At the top of the hill he saw a beautiful lady dressed like an Indian princess. She said she was the Mother of God, and asked him to tell the bishop that a church should be built in the place where she stood. Juan did as he was told, but the bishop was cautious about believing him, and asked Juan to ask the Lady for a sign.

Our Lady told Juan to return the next day and she would give him a sign for the bishop. But, instead of meeting Our Lady, the next day Juan hurried to find a priest to anoint his sick uncle. On his way, Juan again saw Our Lady who said, “Your uncle will not die at this time. His health is restored and he is quite well. Go to the top of the hill and cut the flowers that are growing there. Bring them to me.”

It was winter and too cold for flowers to be growing, but Juan did as Our Lady asked. At the top of the hill, he found the most beautiful roses! He quickly cut them and brought them back to Mary, who arranged them with her own hands in his tilma, or cloak. She then sent him to show the bishop the sign he requested and to remind him of her desire that a church be built. As Juan proudly opened his tilma to show him the beautiful flowers, the bishop fell to his knees in reverent awe. But it was not the flowers that they were looking at on Juan’s tilma. There, printed miraculously, was the image of the beautiful Lady. This was the bishop's sign, and the church was built.

The image of Our Lady of Guadalupe remains miraculously preserved on Juan’s tilma, which is on display in the cathedral that was built on the site where Juan met Our Lady. Devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe has spread far and wide since she first appeared to Juan Diego nearly five hundred years ago.

Learn more about the Catholic Liturgical Year

Each liturgical year begins on the First Sunday of Advent, and consists of a seasonal cycle (the Proper of Time) and a sanctoral cycle (the Proper of Saints). Both are organized and published in a liturgical calendar, which is also enriched by observances proper to local Churches, whether national, diocesan, parish-level, or religious community. The Paschal Mystery of Jesus Christ - his suffering, death, and resurrection - is continuously proclaimed and renewed through celebrating the events of his life and in the feasts of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the saints.

The liturgical year is made up of six seasons:
  • Advent - four weeks of preparation before the celebration of Jesus' birth
  • Christmas - recalling the Nativity of Jesus Christ and his manifestation to all people
  • Ordinary Time - divided into two sections (one span of 4-8 weeks after Christmas Time and another lasting about six months after Easter Time), wherein the faithful consider the fullness of Jesus' teachings and works among his people
  • Lent - a six-week period of penance before Easter
  • Sacred Paschal Triduum - the holiest "Three Days" of the Church's year, where the faithful recall the suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus
  • Easter - 50 days of joyful celebration of the Lord's resurrection from the dead and his sending forth of the Holy Spirit
The mystery of Christ, unfolded through the cycle of the year, calls us to live his mystery in our own lives. This call is best illustrated in the lives of Mary and the saints, celebrated by the Church throughout the year.

Ministering With Media

When families celebrate the cycle of the Church year with all its varied seasons and delightful feast days, they are more likely to appreciate the Mass and the changing tones of the seasons and celebrations. Advent, which marks the start of the new liturgical year, provides an opportunity to teach about the unique beauty of each liturgical season and encourage the weekly return to Mass. Resources available and ready to be shipped from the ERC include storybooks, posters, hands-on activities, games, and DVDs. A small sampling of these, in addition to online resources, are listed below.

Making Inclusion Work in Catholic Faith Formation

All children are God's children and whatever their strengths, needs, or disabilities, we must make it clear to them and to their families that they belong to the Church community and belong as active participants in our religious education programs!

Check out this article by Allie Johnston from Sadlier.com to explore ways you can help all children grow as Jesus's disciples and successfully include diverse learners in Catholic faith formation. Plus, download a parent surveyactivity, and social script that will support your efforts to create a more supportive and inclusive program.  All downloads are English and Spanish.
