We're very excited to be partnering with the Collingwood Public Library to offer a Virtual Author Talk with Luba Lesychyn, October 22, 7 PM.

Theft By Chocolate and Theft Between the Rains: Museums' Secret Spaces
About the talk: "Certain functions are consistent in all museums, like research, collecting, preserving, and displaying. But in Luba Lesychyn's two humorous art theft thrillers, she draws on her more than 20 years at Toronto's Royal Ontario Museum to take readers to some uniquely fascinating areas off limits to the public. She will read some of her favourite scenes that take place in museum spaces you might never have imagined existed. And despite the two-part series being a long love letter to the ROM, Luba will share how the inspirations, writing processes, and publishing experiences with each book could not have been more different."

Victorian Halloween
Facebook Live
October 29, 7 PM

Museum staff will be exploring the spookier side of the Victorian era by presenting a small selection of macabre items from the artifact collection.

Victorian culture was rich with imagery that we still associate with Halloween today. Whether it's the spooky mansions, gruesome medical practices, gothic literature, or elaborate mourning rituals, many Victorian practices can be found represented in your favourite horror movies or Halloween traditions.

One artifact to be featured is a wreath made from human hair. Although this piece may seem unsettling now, making art from hair was a popular past-time for Victorian women. Tune in to the broadcast to learn more and to see the other artifacts chosen by staff.

The Collingwood Museum Staff and Advisory Committee members would like to wish all of you a safe and happy Thanksgiving.

It was common during the early 1900s for friends and relatives to communicate during holiday celebrations by sending a handwritten note, often in the form of a postcard. We hope you enjoy this beautiful postcard from the archival collection (000.21.4).
