We lift prayers to the Lord for friends and family:
  • Our country and our medical and economic issues surrounding Covid virus.
  • Our African American brothers and sisters seeking justice.
  • Also, God, as there are always more to the stories of justice, we pray for the families of police officers killed on duty. Prayers for all police officers and their families as they risk their lives daily to protect us.
  • Those trying to clean up and work through the destruction of recent storms
  • Firefighters tackling the fires on the west coast and residents who are in danger and those who have lost their homes and property.
  • Children and school staff who have gone back to in-person learning and those who are learning from home.
  • Kathy Gava’s friend, Carol, has cancer and has returned to the hospital.
  • Prayers for the Mills family.
  • Ursula, granddaughter of Gene and Linda Andrus, has Covid-19.

27th Sunday in Ordinary Time

World Communion Sunday

Worship Service October 4

Live streamed and
In-person with limited attendance

10:15-11:30 am

Lectionary for this Sunday:
Philippians 3:4b-14
Matthew 21:33-46

Please have your communion elements on hand if you are worshiping from home.

In-person worship congregation will be limited to 50 individuals. Registration for October 4 will continue through noon on Friday, October 2. People may register by calling the church office (281-852-8990, option 3) and leaving a message with name, the total number of people planning to attend, and a contact number. Please register for only one week at a time.

Every effort has been made to make the return to the sanctuary a positive experience while keeping everyone safe. More ushers have been assigned in order to assist the congregation in a seating arrangement that provides for physical distancing. Hand sanitizers are available and face masks are required. There will not be a printed bulletin. You may print the Order of Worship from the APC website and bring it with you or utilize the screens in the sanctuary.

Sunday worship is also through BoxCast, a professional live streaming application.

Here’s how to get the BoxCast video:
  1. From the website home screen (apchumble.org) –click on the “Our Next Live Broadcast” link or anywhere on the picture with the count-down clock showing the time remaining to the start of the broadcast.
  2. When the play button appears in place of the count-down clock, click on it and the broadcast begins. Click on the red “HELP – How to View BoxCast” if you need assistance.  Note that you can put the mouse cursor on the video (on a computer) or touch the video (on a phone or tablet) to show the control bar and from there you can enlarge the video to full screen, pause it, or adjust the volume.  If you’re a little late arriving or want to watch later, that’s okay because you can view the entire broadcast from the beginning.
Use the chat screen to the right of the broadcast or email us (youbelong@apchumble.org) to let us know that you’re watching or give us feedback.

To enhance your Sunday morning worship, you may view or print the Order of Worship from a link on the website.

If you would prefer to watch the worship service on your big screen TV and have a Roku, Apple TV, or Amazon Fire TV stick attached, you can add the BoxCast Channel, open that channel, and search for “Atascocita” to view the broadcast.

By sharing pictures (send only one) with each other, we can stay updated on what members of our faith community are up to while we're apart from each other. For October 11, please send a picture of your favorite picture of a child or children.

A scripture to enhance the children theme is Job 21:11
"They send out their little ones like a flock, and their children dance."

Please email a single picture of children by noon, Friday, October 9 to youbelong@apchumble.org.

ZOOM has changed their security protocols so that all online meetings now require either a passcode or a waiting room to gain entry.
  • Shelley's and Doug's Faith Formation classes now have waiting rooms when you first enter the meeting.  The meeting host will release you from the waiting room and admit you to the meeting.
  • All other ZOOM meetings require a passcode.  The meeting passcode is shown next to the meeting link on the church website.
  • Sunday Worship broadcast does not use ZOOM and access continues with no change.
Wednesdays on the Beach Devotional Series
Live Streamed
The mid-week devotional will be Wednesday, October 7, at 6:30 pm via Zoom.

For a link to view the devotional series, go to the APC website (apchumble.org) and click on "View our live streaming schedule." Click on "Wednesdays on the Beach Devotional" live streamed. The meeting passcode is shown next to the meeting link on the church website.

Faith Formation Lessons
for Children

As APC moves to reopen the church, we are looking forward to the time when we can meet for in-person Faith Formation. At this time, rather than trying to do too much too soon, we have decided to wait a little longer to start Sunday classes.

We will be doing children's programming in October and planning a special fall event at the end of the month. Watch the website and Narthex News for details.

Please feel free to contact Lisa Stacy with any questions or concerns related to APC Children’s Ministries by email, lisastacy3@yahoo.com or home phone 281-852-2986.

Youth Ministry
Aaron is hosting weekly Sunday afternoon Zoom calls at 4 pm with youth, along with various Youth Committee leaders. The time is used to catch up with each other, get to know one another, pray for each other, and join in virtual fellowship. Please keep our youth in your prayers as they are struggling with so much being cancelled, big events not happening, and adjusting to the unknown. Youth can also still get excited for the presbytery's annual Youth Rally this year which will be done virtually in November! More information will be provided soon.

Go to apchumble.org and click on "View our live streaming worship and meetings schedule" at the top of the page, then click on "join Youth Group." The meeting passcode is shown next to the meeting link on the church website.

Adult Faith Formation Class

with Pastor Shelly

will meet Sunday
by Zoom live streaming
& in person

Faith Formation, Sunday, October 4, will be BOTH ZOOM online AND in person. Please make the choice that is right for you. If you’ll be online, sign into the class at 9:15 am using the Zoom link provided on the church website.

Zoom classes now have waiting rooms when you first enter the meeting. The meeting host will release you from the waiting room and admit you to the meeting. In-person class will continue in our regular classroom (102) since there's plenty of room to be physically distanced. Bibles are available, although you may want to bring your own Bible. Please wear a  face mask. Hand sanitizers will be on the table.

We’ll dip into the Hebrew Bible to read 8th century BCE prophet, Isaiah 5: 1-7.  This “Song of the Vineyard” is not the primary scripture Jackie will preach. But it is a foundational scripture for her sermon on Matthew 21: 33 - 46 - the Parable of the Wicked Tenants.

Isaiah, speaking on Yahweh’s behalf (+ a portion of direct speech from Yahweh) prophesies judgment on Israel and Judah. This is ironic because it’s often subtitled “The Song of the Vineyard.”  We’ll discuss this irony in class.

Questions?  Of course, don’t hesitate to email me at pastorshelleycraig@gmail.com.
See you Sunday one way or another! Class will not meet Sunday, October 11.

When class concludes you will close Zoom, i.e. “Leave the meeting,” and return to the church website live stream page (apchumble.org/zoom.php). Click on the link to the worship service, which will take you to the BoxCast broadcast which begins at 10:20.

Adult Faith Formation Class

with Doug Kennard

will meet Sunday
by Zoom live streaming

Doug Kennard’s Sunday Adult Faith Formation class Sunday, October 4, from 9:15 to 10:15 am through the Zoom invite https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83087066050 or from apchumble.org live streaming page. Zoom classes now have waiting rooms when you first enter the meeting.  The meeting host will release you from the waiting room and admit you to the meeting.

Chapter ten, on sign Child, will be the topic of this week's discussion in Kennard's book, A Biblical Theology of the Book of Isaiah. Eugene: Wipf & Stock, 2020.  Paper 978-1-7252-5478-7 or ebook 978-1-7252-5480-0. Good to keep seeing you through zoom.

When class concludes you will close Zoom, i.e. “Leave the meeting,” and return to the church website live stream page (apchumble.org/zoom.php). Click on the link to the worship service, which will take you to the BoxCast broadcast which begins at 10:20.

Starting in November our next book is Beitzel, Barry. The New Moody Atlas of the Bible. Chicago: Moody Publishers, 2009.   ISBN 978-0-8024-0441-1  The goal is to get the BIG picture of history and geography and movement in the Bible and I know of no better source to do this. The main point is not archeology, nor apologetics, but maps but there is really nice overview textual discussion of these big movements.

The Spiritual Fellowship Committee is in the planning stage to develop a new APC cookbook. A meeting will be scheduled soon.

If you like to cook or like to eat, please join us. Please contact Ellen Nipe (enipe@comcast.net), Ann Owen (annowen@suddenlink.net), or Carol Cutshall (carolpcutshall@gmail.com).

Peace and Global Witness

Special Offering
Through participation in the Peace & Global Witness Offering, our church is extending Christ’s peace throughout our community and our world. We begin at the communion table, with our siblings in every time and place, and we celebrate the peace we find there and commit to building a more just and peaceful world. We celebrate the truth found in 2nd Thessalonians, “May the God of peace give you peace at all times in all ways.

Donations may be made from now until World Communion Sunday, October 4 online through the APC website (apchumble.org). Click on the "Give Now" button at the top right of the home page. Checks mailed to the church (19426 Atasca Oaks Dr, Humble, 77346) with a notation on the memo line will be credited to the P&GW Fund.
