Fall into a New Season of Watershed Education at Stroud Water Research Center!

It’s our favorite time of year at the Stroud Center: when our streamside forests don their showiest colors, fallen leaves begin to swirl through White Clay Creek, and thousands of our youngest stewards greet a new school year in partnership with Stroud Center educators.

Fall in the new (ab)normal of COVID-19 is unlike any other, but you autumn be-leaf we are still engaging K through gray audiences in freshwater-focused environmental education! (We know, our education team is a-corny.) Our educators continue to adapt in-person, boots-in-the-water education programs into virtual, stream-to-screen education programs for all ages. While following strict COVID-19 safety guidelines, we’re also delivering outdoor-only education programs both on-site and off-site, including on-the-water canoeing education programs!
Read on to discover virtual learning tools, free curricula, and upcoming events in watershed education!

Announcing Fall Programming Opportunities!

While following the best data available on COVID-19 safety, the Stroud Center education department is now offering three types of program scenarios for fall 2020:
  • Virtual/online stream and watershed study experiences
  • Outdoor-only education programs located at the Stroud Center
  • Outdoor education programs at your site (e.g., school or local park)
No matter where you are in the world, contact the Stroud Center education department (educationprograms@stroudcenter.org) to schedule a virtual watershed education experience or pursue one of our in-person, outdoor-only program options. To request a program or class for the 2020-2021 school year, please submit your request through this online form.

Do you represent a Pennsylvania public school? The Stroud Center is able to offer a subsidized or reduced-cost education program (virtual or in-person) thanks to our generous EITC donors! Learn more after submitting a program request.

Dive into Model My Watershed, a Videogame-Like Tool for Watershed Discovery!

Looking for FREE digital learning tools for middle schoolers to adults? Visit Model My Watershed® (ModelMW) for a watershed-modeling web app that enables citizens, conservation practitioners, municipal decision-makers, educators, and students to analyze real land use and soil data in their neighborhoods and watersheds in the continental U.S. During this dynamic, videogame-like learning experience, you can map real geospatial data, model stormwater runoff in your local watershed, and compare real-world conservation or development scenarios!

New to ModelMW? Explore the ModelMW Help page, or check out the 45-minute online seminar below to learn from the experts!
“Model My Watershed allows students to quantify what sustainability looks like using real data to make compelling arguments for certain conservation practices in certain areas. It is amazing to see how much more invested students become in these projects knowing that they are using real-world data to help solve real-world problems.”
— James Hovan, 10th through 12th grade biology teacher in Lancaster, Pennsylvania
Want to hear more about how Model My Watershed is flooding classrooms coast-to-coast? Check out this story to learn how teachers like Mr. Hovan are using Model My Watershed to spark three-dimensional learning and watershed stewardship.

Not Quite Ready for ModelMW? Dip Your Toes in the Water with the Runoff Simulation!

Hungry for FREE digital learning tools for younger ages? Check out the Runoff Simulation, an animated version of the Site Storm Model package of ModelMW in which learners explore how land use and soil determine whether rainfall infiltrates, runs off, or is evaporated/transpired by plants! This digital learning tool can help young K-5 learners explore stormwater runoff, soil types, and the water cycle. It’s also a terrific tool among older ages as a precursor to ModelMW!

Free Watershed-Modeling Curricula for Middle School, High School, and College Students!

Do you need hands-on lessons that engage students in online tools while also providing opportunities for outdoor exploration and evaluation? We invite caregivers/parents, homeschoolers, teachers, and educators to explore these units from our WikiWatershed Toolkit Curricula page:

💧 Watershed Modeling STEM Mini-Unit: This mini-unit was designed for middle and high school students to learn systems thinking and geospatial analysis skills in the context of place-based problem-solving for watershed science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). During two interactive lessons (Lesson One: Effects of Land Cover and Soils in Watersheds and Lesson Two: Modeling Improvements to My Schoolyard), students use online GIS-based modeling tools to develop an understanding of stormwater dynamics in their schoolyard, on their home property, or anywhere they choose in nearby nature! Download the mini-unit teacher guide and student worksheets today!
💧 Teaching Environmental Sustainability – Model My Watershed Five-Lesson Unit: Follow directions on our Curricula page to find this middle school unit on the Innovative Technology in Science Inquiry (ITSI) portal.
💧 Water SCIENCE Four-Lesson Unit: Follow directions on our Curricula page to find this middle school unit at our project partner’s (Concord Consortium) STEM Resource Finder.
💧 College Curriculum: Follow directions on our Curricula page to find this college-level unit on the Carleton College’s InTeGrate portal.
