Dear Parents and Guardians,

Despite all of the changes we have had to make this year, some things remain the same.  For example, we continue to do standardized testing (NWEA) with all students in grades K-8.  This assessment is given three times during the school year - at the beginning, middle, and end -  in order to help track student progress.  This is important data and we are thankful that we have been able to continue tracking this.  Thank you, especially, to all of the parents who took the time to bring in their remote learners so they could complete this assessment!

Another thing that has not changed is the dedication of our teachers and their desire to engage and support their students’ academic, social, emotional, and spiritual growth, despite the need for a hybrid style of learning.

This week, I would love to highlight a few ways in which this is happening in Junior High.
Science- It’s no secret that hand sanitizer is in high demand lately.  Mrs. J wanted to make sure her students never went without and so this past week our Junior High Students created their very own hand sanitizer.

Mass – With our need for social distancing, only two classes can safely attend our Friday school mass in-person.  Our 8th graders have begun assisting with the livestreaming of the mass so that students in all grades can participate from their classrooms.  What a better example of stewardship than bringing the word of God to our classrooms and classmates by way of a livestream mass!

Fundraising – This pandemic won’t keep our graduating class of 2021 from fundraising for their 8th grade activities and celebrations. This Saturday, our 8th grade class will hold a Community Shred Day. See later in the newsletter for details.

Saints –Our 8th graders have begun preparing for the next step of their spiritual journey, Confirmation. They have chosen their saint names and are preparing themselves to be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit. Two of our 8th graders, who happen to be fantastic artists, will also be drawing saints to display in every classroom.

Service – Everyday housekeeping is necessary for the upkeep or our school and our junior high students have been helping with the weekly recycling and will also begin updating our Wilber St. marquee sign.

Enrichment Course - Our Junior High students have been attending Mr. Donovan’s Enrichment Course two times a week. One particular lesson, Bios and Zoe, was a favorite of our 6th grade students. Not sure what Bios and Zoe means? Ask a 6th grader!

The Junior High students have already begun to amaze me with the many different ways in which they are becoming leaders and showing enthusiasm for learning this year, despite so many changes.  I look forward to highlighting other grade levels in future newsletters!

This week our 5th grade class will plan and attend the mass with the 2nd grade Traditional class. If you have a child in either of those grades, you are welcome to come and celebrate Mass in the church, otherwise you can view the live-stream Mass via Zoom, please look for the link later in this newsletter.

Have a blessed week!

Queridos padres y guardianes,

At our recent parish pastoral council meeting, we discussed how our pastoral priority teams might offer some online or, if feasible, in-person programs and activities next spring if not sooner.  We also discussed how we might focus on one or two short-term programs.  A good example is the bible study on the Gospel of Mark that Brother James Posluszny, C.S.C., will offer our parishioners beginning October 1st, and a possible spiritual book discussion series in Advent. We’ve been inviting parishioners to participate in the outdoor weekly Jesus Gallery taking place on our front lawn, and the in-person weekly holy hour and monthly rosary in the church, where there’s plenty of room for social distancing.  Of course Father Vincent’s recent Mass of Thanksgiving and reception were a wonderful opportunity for socially-distanced fellowship as a parish community.
In addition, I hope you have seen the several online programs offered by the diocese, and have considered participating in those that appeal to you: the Prayer Service for Racial Justice; Just Desserts Monthly Date Night; the Annual Anniversary Mass; Alpha Online; the Marriage Course Online; and the in-person Annual Life Chain.  Our parish is a member of the Church (Diocese) of Fort Wayne-South Bend, and as such we should be taking advantage of the programs and activities offered us by the diocese as well as by our own parish.  The ongoing pandemic necessitates that we continue to care for our health and not endanger the health of others.  At the same time I look forward to seeing how our parish can resume responding to the spiritual needs of our parishioners in the months ahead.
