"Shut up man"

Last night the richest and most powerful democratic country in the world had to endure the spectacle of two old white men shouting over one another and trading personal insults in a 'chaotic and bitter' debate to see who gets to be in charge. Old tangerine Trump is not only directly damaging the democratic process in the US, and weakening the faith of many in America's democratic institutions, he is also a symptom of this erosion of trust and respect, and he seems to delight in dragging everyone down with him.

In the UK just over a hundred years ago women won the right to vote, and ten years later, suffrage was extended to all adult British citizens no matter their gender, colour, or wealth. These democratic rights, along with other legal protections that we take for granted now, have not been around forever. They were hard won in bitter battles, and they could be so easily lost again (see free university education and access to social housing).

We reject Trump because he represents the erosion of over a century of democratic and social progress won by the self-sacrificing struggles of previous generations - just as he opposes those fighting for black lives now. We reject Trump because he thrives on division, greed and hatred while the future of everyone on the planet depends on the opposite.

Every selfless act, every decision to trust somebody, every defence of democracy (with all it's flaws) is a rejection of Trump and the existential threat he poses to everyone.

Computer needed!

Computer needed! Our ancient event space laptop will no longer play audio without sounding like it's channeling a particularly surly demon so we're needing an upgrade - and we're hoping one of you lovely people might have an old(er) machine that's surplus to requirements that could do the job! It doesn't need to be very fancy - preferably a desktop running Windows 10 (or thereabouts), with a DVD/Blu-ray drive, and capable of playing music and films. We have spare monitors so no problem if it doesn't come with one.

Please contact cj.slater@prsc.org.uk if you can help - we're happy to collect from anywhere fairly central... thanks!

According to the Bristol City Council, Bristol has 16 cases per 100,000 people, compared to England’s average of 46 per 100,000. However, the council said: “Although not as severe as other parts of the country, Bristol has also seen an increase in the number of confirmed Covid-19 cases this week”.

In their latest newsletter, Bristol City Council expressed their hope that residents and businesses follow new rules to avoid fines, limit coronavirus cases and prevent a further lockdown.

  • “Rule of six” : people must not be allowed to meet in groups larger than 6 in England - fines start from £200.
  • People who are not exempt and supposed to wear a face covering can be fined £200.
  • Businesses can now be fined up to £10,000 for not following rules.
  • From 28 September, people will be required to self-isolate and fines start at £1,000 if the law is breached by an individual.

Through the lens...

Another evolution of the 'Not Enough Trees' billboard by the M32. We loved these subvertised posters when they first appeared in May, and we've been really enjoying watching them age

Spotted on our blanket store this week.

Four years ago today, moving our big kiln into its new home.

No piano in Covid times.

Found a stray dog in the yard.

Throughout this crisis our work with rough sleepers continues. Please click on the button below to support this ongoing work.
