Welcome to our October Newsletter with an update on our online events and useful resources to help with your family history research.  

We are currently in 'local lockdown' here in South Wales with restrictions on moving from our local areas.  New COVID-19 cases have continued to rise over the past few weeks and so re-starting our face or face meetings or re-opening our Resource Centre at Aberkenfig does not look likely until at least  the New Year or Spring 2021.   
Branch AGMs: Two of our Branches (Cardiff & Bridgend) will be holding their Branch AGMs online via Zoom in October.  The other Branches are planning to hold their AGMs as soon as restrictions are lifted and they can safely return to their venues with social distancing in place.   Contact the individual branches for more information.

Extra-Ordinary General Meeting: We shall be holding an Extra-Ordinary General Meeting on Saturday 7 November in order to make changes to our Constitution.  The amendments were included in the September journal and can be viewed on our website.   We need 25 members to make the changes so please join us at 11 am on Saturday 7th November and enable us to progress with these amendments which are outstanding from our AGM in February when we did not have a quorum.  This meeting should not take very long before the presentation can begin!   

Brickwall/Beginners Session 3: Following the short EGM will be the third of our Brickwall/Beginners Sessions 'Lost in the Census - Using family groups and other sources to find missing ancestors' - Sue Hamer.

The Extraordinary General Meeting should only last
for approximately 10-15 Minutes. 
The Executive Committee needs to make amendments to the Constitution. 
These were circulated to members in the September journal and are available on the website.

Protestation Returns (1642)

Guide to Protestation Returns for Family History
"The Protestation Returns are the closest record we have to a census from 1642. By order of the House of Commons, all adult men were asked to swear an oath of allegiance to the Protestant religion in 1642. Their names were duly inscribed in a list in each parish, and the list sent back to Parliament. In a few areas such as Cornwall, people wrote their own names, and women were included. But usually a local official wrote out all the names. The Protestation Returns survive for about a third of English counties."

UK Parliamentary Records Online  - Click on Protestation Records and scroll through to County and/or Parish. 
Or  Search the online catalogue for Parish or Name.

FREE DOWNLOADS - Still available while limited opening service continues
Download up to 50 digitised items per 30-day period free of charge.  Usually the price is £3.50 per document.
 Only 10 items can be downloaded at a time, but when you have done so you can go back and collect some more (subject to the above limit). 

Online Collections  - Some digital copies are available on Find My Past and Ancestry but if you do not have a subscription to both or either of these websites you can now access some of the National Archives online collections free at present while the Archives is offering a limited service.
