Flexible consistency.

Hi friends!

Is it really October? This year is both the longest and the shortest in history.

When I look around me, I can't help but feel amazed at what people have accomplished. Some of you have grown their businesses, learned new skills, launched something new, or started working in public. Others have simply held on, which is a feat in and of itself. Whether we realise it or not, all of us have gone through a life-altering transition.

Which got me thinking: since chaos seems to be the norm, how can we thrive despite life throwing all sorts of unexpected challenges at us?

My hypothesis: flexible consistency, or the ability to focus on trends on a macro-level rather than setbacks at a micro-level.

We'll also talk about one of my pet peeves, semantic traps. Like when people say something is better because it's “natural” :)

Enjoy the read, and hit reply if you have any questions, feedback, or want to say hello!

p.s. thank you everyone for filling the feedback form last week! I'll analyse the results and share them with you soon.

p.p.s. if you run a team that's working remotely, get in touch to chat about my 1-hour mindful productivity workshop.

Virtual meetup. Anyone can leverage the end of credentialism to become a lifelong learner. But what are the best strategies to teach yourself something new? Come discuss the challenges and opportunities of self-education. Register »

Brain food

The power of flexible consistency (5 min)
Aldous Huxley wrote: “The only completely consistent people are the dead.” Life is chaotic. Flexible consistency is about combining proactive planning with reactive adaptation so you can make significant progress over the long-term.

Semantic traps: why vague words are risky (4 min)
In politics and linguistics, semantic traps are words so vague that we cannot give them specific meaning. They are often used to stir a debate in a certain direction, or to influence people’s judgement.

How to build diagrams in Roam Research (3 min)
As a big fan of thinking in maps, I’m always curious about tools to lay out and connect ideas visually. Many people are not aware as this is a bit of a hidden functionality, but you can actually create diagrams in Roam.

On writing (Twitter)
“The trick is to teach yourself to read in small sips as well as in long swallows.”

For acid (Spotify)
“A playlist of songs that sound particularly suited for LSD (...) optimized for double-meaning lyrics, layered sounds, and more unique/unpredictable styles.”

Memory board (Twitter)
“This is a lukasa memory board, used by luba men of memory to encode and recall information.”
