Community Meal Service

While COVID-19 has changed how we serve, we stand firm in our commitment to our community meals program.  This year, SPUR volunteers have provided 1,100 meals to neighbors facing food insecurity through meal services at shelters in our community.  We've expanded our meal service opportunities and are excited to continue our work with your partnership.
Volunteer to provide meals now.
Each month, SPUR volunteers prepare meals to be served at Lifebridge, an organization that provides housing, shelter, and social services in Salem.  Volunteers prepare 10 servings of a nutritious meal at home from a recipe provided by SPUR and then deliver those meals to an address in Marblehead.  Learn more and sign up to cook for Lifebridge in 2020.
At Bridgewell Recuperative Care Center in Lynn, SPUR volunteers prepare and serve meals to clients facing homelessness with complex medical needs on the first Friday of each month.  Volunteers of all ages are welcome to sign up to prepare meals at home, but in-person meal service is only open to those ages 18 and up.  Learn more and sign up to prepare and serve meals at Bridgewell in 2020.
As part of SPUR's new Bridgewell Meal Drop program, volunteers prepare hot meals at home for Bridgewell clients and drop them off at the facility to be served by the Bridgewell staff.  Dates for this twice monthly meal service are open to volunteers of all ages for dates through the end of 2020.  Learn more and sign up to cook for Bridgewell residents.

Land and Sea Community Clean Up

On Sunday, September 20, over 300 volunteers came out for SPUR's largest-ever community clean up organized in partnership with Sustainable Marblehead. Over 80 bags of trash and debris were filled by volunteers at 30 beaches and parks in Lynn, Marblehead, Salem, and Swampscott.
Volunteers collected spent fireworks, used masks, old shoes, a metal plow, discarded baseballs, a lead pipe, a pair of underwear, and much more while cleaning our community's public spaces.

Thank you to all of the volunteers who made the clean up a success!
While big things were growing in the SPUR Community Roots Garden at St. Andrew's, volunteer Haley was hard at work to help recipients of the garden's produce create simple, healthy meals. The fruit of her labor is a new cookbook full of recipes using the garden's produce along with affordable, easy-to-find pantry staples.

"My hope is the the recipe book I created will act as the final piece in SPUR’s farm to table process," Haley said. "The book serves to help those in the community receiving the garden’s goods to transform them into delectable and nutritious meals."
