ISS Addresses Immigration Issues
Impacting International Students
The pandemic is just one of several challenges international students studying in the U.S. have been faced with in recent months, as proposed changes to immigration regulations create widespread concern and uncertainty. Case Western Reserve University's Office of International Student Services (ISS) and the rest of the Center for International Affairs has been working to ensure students understand the rapid changes while reminding them how important they are to our campus community.
The Trump Administration is considering suspending the Option Practical Training (OPT) program for international students which is an employment authorization for those with an F-1 visa who have studied for at least one year in the U.S. The loss of the OPT program would significantly impact international enrollment at U.S. universities and the U.S. economy.
Another major change under consideration is a proposal from the Department of Homeland Security to eliminate what's known as "duration of status" for F students, J exchange visitors and their dependents. This would mean that instead of being admitted to the U.S. for their "duration of status" as a student, exchange visitor or dependent, they would be admitted for no more than four years.
In response to these proposals, the Center for International Affairs staff sent a letter to 2 U.S senators and 16 representatives to advocate for OPT and encourage them to allow it to continue. Additionally, ISS has reached out to all international students to make sure they are informed and aware that staff are working to learn as much as possible and are available to support them. ISS also shared an opportunity for students to submit comments that will be part of the formal review process before the "duration of status" rule is finalized.

CWRU to Celebrate International Education Week Early
This year the U.S. Department of State will be celebrating International Education Week from November 16 - 20. As that is the last week CWRU students will be on campus for the semester, the Center for International Affairs will be celebrating a week early, from November 9 - 13. The Office of Education Abroad will be hosting a week-long virtual Study Abroad Fair as part of the celebration, and the Center is currently planning other activities. Giveaway Helps
Students Celebrate Asian Mid-Autumn Festival
Since 2015, the CWRU campus community has celebrated Asian Mid-Autumn Festival with a large event featuring traditional food, music and activities. While the pandemic prevented such a gathering this year, the Center for International Affairs wanted to ensure students were still able to celebrate.
The Center hosted a giveaway event for students last week featuring free mooncakes and CWRU rabbit stress balls. Volunteers from the Chinese Student Association and the Chinese Students and Scholars Association helped hand out the items to students, who were very appreciative.

Get to Know the Center for International Affairs
The Office of Education Abroad helps students expand their worldview and enhance their academic and personal growth through study abroad experiences which include intern, research, service-learning, clinical experience and virtual opportunities around the world.
Studying abroad provides numerous benefits to students during their time at CWRU and in their future career, as it helps them gain experiences and develop skills that employers find valuable.
Our advisors are available during virtual drop-in hours from 1-3 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays or by appointment. They also host information sessions and events such as Study Abroad Friday Forums to help students explore the opportunities available to them and hear from other students about their experiences abroad.
