International Translation Day 2020

Today is International Translation Day, and as Arc has been publishing poetry in translation for over 50 years (in bilingual editions since 2000), we thought we would take this opportunity of highlighting some of our more recent publications.

Arc is regarded as one of the UK’s foremost publishers of poetry in translation and to date, has published poetry in 44 languages, introducing the work of some of the world’s leading poets to an English-language readership for the first time. Our full list of translated titles can be seen on the Arc Publications website in the Arc Translation Series.
Gerdur Kristny Reykjavik Requiem
The third of a trilogy of poetic sequences by Iceland’s leading female poet, focusing on violence to women in a society that was not prepared to hear their stories. Told, almost sung, in a voice that inhabits a mysterious and murky territory, it is a requiem not only for one dead woman but for all abused women whose voices have never been heard.
Mila Haugova Eternal Traffic
Since publication of this book at the beginning of the year, the Slovak poet Mila Haugova has been awarded the prestigious Vilenica Prize for Central European Literature 2020, presented earlier this month.
Esther Dischereit Sometimes a Single Leaf
‘Of particular power are her poems that stage complex human interactions… Galbraith’s translations render very compellingly the sparse lines and subtle rhythms of Dischereit’s free-verse poems.’
Karin Schutjer World Literature Today
Poetry of the Holocaust: an Anthology, edited by Jean Boase-Beier and Marian de Vooght
‘This anthology makes for harrowing reading, but it is also historically and linguistically and poetically necessary. As the introduction makes clear, “the time after the Holocaust is still ongoing”. We must keep the stories alive.’
Tara Bergin, PN Review
And to end with, Timothy Adès reads from his masterly translation of the complete poems of the French poet Robert Desnos, Surrealist, Lover, Resistant, published by Arc in 2017.
