On Sunday, October 4 (6 pm PT/9 pm EST) on a Town Hall Seattle livestream event, Caty will be joined in conversation with Marcia Smith, president and co-founder of Firelight Media, which produces documentary films, provides artistic and financial support to emerging filmmakers of color, and builds impact campaigns to connect documentaries to audiences and social justice advocates.

On Monday, October 5 (3 pm PT/6 pm EST), American University School of Communication (AU SOC) hosts a book talk with Caty and Elaine McMillion Sheldon, an Academy Award-nominated, and Emmy and Peabody-winning documentary filmmaker based in Appalachia. A 2020 Guggenheim Fellow, Elaine has directed two Netflix Original Documentaries that explore America's opioid crisis, "Heroin(e)" and "Recovery Boys." The conversation will be moderated by Leena Jayaswal, documentary filmmaker, award-winning photographer, CMSI faculty fellow and professor at AU SOC, where she is the director of AU’s Photography program.

Getting Real with the International Documentary Association

Don’t miss so many of our friends and collaborators on sessions at the International Documentary Association’s biennial Getting Real convening of global nonfiction filmmakers -- including Working Films, Documentary Producers Alliance, Firelight Media, and many more. Today at 12 pm EST, CMSI senior research fellow Pat Aufderheide will be part of a working group led by Sonya Childress focused on ethics and accountability code for documentary filmmaking.

The 2020 State of the Documentary Field Survey

Documentary Producers Alliance Economic Guidelines

CMSI is proud to be one of the endorsing organizations for the landmark Documentary Producers Alliance (DPA) Guidelines for the Documentary Waterfall, which illuminates and guides nonfiction economics. DPA aims to create a set of standards for financing in documentary film including investments, recoupable grants, and other financing tools intended to serve filmmakers, investors, and donors in financial discussions and negotiations.
