Mountain Biking
Destination by Design Planning (VLP park planner) has submitted a grant application for the construction of 5 miles of mountain bike trails at Valdese Lakeside Park.

This will be an awesome addition to Phase 1 amenities (parking, restroom, greenway, kayak launch, overlook, dog park) that are coming soon. We will know in November if Valdese has been awarded the grant.
Burke River Trail Update
The trail planning team (Rep. Blackwell, FVR President Beth Heile and WPCOG staffers) has announced that the Burke River Trail will now be known as the Catawba River Trail. After meeting with the City of Morganton, everyone agreed that with the trail's connection to the Catawba River Greenway, using Catawba in the name would boost marketing for 25-mile trail/greenway. The trail is the vision of Representative Blackwell. Knowing that trails generate economic activity, provide bike and pedestrian transportation, improve citizen health and are better for the environment than other development options, he wants eastern Burke County’s small towns to reap all these benefits and more! Other recent visits included the Town of Long View, Connelly Springs, and Drexel.

River Cleanup & Research
Saturday, October 3 at 9am will be a River Cleanup by Boat -- and a Reconnaissance Mission to check the proposed trail route of the Catawba River Trail. Bring your kayak or canoe to the Rocky Ford Access on Hwy 64/18 - the end of the Morganton Greenway for put in. While picking up trash along the way - we will scout out where the trail will follow along the river. One key location is the Vulcan Materials site - where they have agreed to allow the trail to be on their property - and are even interested in a future kayak launch. The cleanup will end at the John's River Access. We will coordinate carpooling at Rocky Ford to make sure everyone can get back!
