Now Open

Since its inception in 1996, the Alberta Biennial of Contemporary Art has brought national attention to Alberta’s art scene, helped promote provincial artists and has presented new and exciting works by over 200 Alberta artists. For the first time, the Art Gallery of Alberta is thrilled to expand the Alberta Biennial beyond provincial borders to jointly develop and concurrently present borderLINE: 2020 Biennial of Contemporary Art with Saskatoon’s Remai Modern.

borderLINE will feature the works of over 30 artists across two provinces and five treaty territories on the theme of ‘Borders’. A border defines an edge. It marks beginnings and endings, a line between yours and mine, between in and out. The 2020 Biennial of Contemporary Art calls attention to how borders are expressed, who can enforce them and what is confined by their limits.

borderLINE: 2020 Biennial of Contemporary Art is organized by the Art Gallery of Alberta and Remai Modern, and curated by Sandra Fraser, Felicia Gay, Franchesca Hebert-Spence and Lindsey Sharman. Presented by ATB Financial at the Art Gallery of Alberta.

Children's Gallery Available for Private Bookings

We are pleased re-open our Children’s Gallery, Animal Architects, available for private bookings! Animal Architects is inspired by the designed structures of insects, mammals and birds and the evolution of these structures over time and space.

Due to the interactive nature of this exhibition, we are taking a single one-hour booking per day for one family or cohort, limited to 10 individuals. Learn more.

Our Children’s Gallery is presented by the Poole Centre of Design program.
