Health Precinct - Whiria te tangata (Weaving the people together)

Kia ora koutou,

It has now been over a year since I was appointed as Independent Chair of Te Papa Hauora Health Precinct. Over the past 12 months, despite the significant disruption caused by COVID, we have received strong commitment and support from our Partners (CDHB, UO, ARA, UC, all supported by Ngai Tahu) through their Advisory Council nominees.

In this newsletter, we’d like to share a little about what’s been happening within the Te Papa Hauora (TPH) Health Precinct.
  • We have delivered a range of events, leveraging off the capabilities of the TPH Partners, to audiences involving the health sector and the wider community. You will read more about some of these events in this newsletter.
  • We have endeavoured to provide regular communications through a variety of channels on collaborative initiatives between the partners. Make sure you visit our Facebook page.
  • We have worked with our partners and other stakeholders in the health sector to facilitate and promote existing and new joint initiatives in Health, in the pursuit of positive collaborative outcomes.
The Precinct is busy, is growing, and still at the beginning of its journey. We have exciting challenges ahead of us, particularly relating to the coordination and facilitation of health research, health education and commercial linkages with the health sector.

It is a pleasure to be associated with such a unique and dynamic initiative.

Peter Townsend
Chair Te Papa Hauora Advisory Council

"We’re talking health” Research talks

On 14 October we are hosting another of our free public research talks events. This event, in association with the Canterbury Medical Research Foundation and the Health Research Society of Canterbury, is an excellent opportunity to hear directly from researchers about the work they are doing to improve health outcomes in our community.

We have an excellent line-up of speakers and topics so if you haven’t yet, make sure you register. This year you can either attend in person at Manawa (refreshments from 5pm) or join us online (talks start at 5.30pm). We hope you can make it!

The Canterbury Collaboration Simulation Evening

Simulation in health is where students and working professionals practise scenarios before experiencing them in real life. This can range from virtual reality simulations of childbirth to taking blood from life-like manikins. Teams of health professionals also take part in scripted emergencies to improve how they work together. Te Papa Hauora recently held an event at the Manawa Simulation Centre to showcase the latest innovations and practices in the Canterbury region. The Canterbury DHB, Universities of Canterbury and Otago, Ara, St Johns and the Defence Force took part and explained how they use simulation and why this rapidly evolving field is so important. It is a good example of the true collaboration emanating from within the Te Papa Hauora Health Precinct. Watch our short video of the evening’s activities here.

HealthTech Supernode Challenge

The HealthTech Supernode Challenge is an innovation programme sponsored by ChristchurchNZ, Kiwi Innovation Network (KiwiNet), and Ryman Healthcare.

The challenge involves a wide range of participants exploring new ideas in health and developing technology solutions to real healthcare problems. Twenty-two top teams have been selected as semi-finalists and are about to finish a 6-week pre-accelerator programme where they have been guided by experts from the Ara Institute of Canterbury-based startup incubator, Te Ōhaka, and ThincLab, the Founder Incubator based out of University of Canterbury’s Centre for Entrepreneurship.

Eight out of the twenty-two finalists will be invited to pitch in front of an expert panel of judges at the final Demo and Awards evening on 22 October at Manawa in the heart of the Te Papa Hauora Health Precinct in Christchurch.

Interprofessional Education and Practice Showcase 2020

This inaugural combined universities showcase is on again this year in Auckland and online. As attendance in person may not be possible for many in Canterbury and the wider South Island, we’d like to offer the opportunity to gather here at Manawa in the Te Papa Hauora Health Precinct and link in together as a group.

Come and join us on the day to watch presentations streamed live from Auckland, network over refreshments, and take part in local discussions on IPE showcase topics. Attendance is free. Please email admin@healthprecinct.org.nz to register.

Construction in the Health Precinct

It is great to see another new building under construction in Te Papa Hauora Health Precinct. This is a multi-story office block being built adjacent to Manawa, by Huadu International (NZ) who were responsible for the construction of the beautiful Manawa Building.

The Manawa Building which houses Ara nursing, midwifery and medical imaging students along with Canterbury District Health Board education and development staff and University of Canterbury staff has just been on sold by Huadu for a record price for a commercial building in Christchurch. This demonstrates and underpins the value of real estate within Te Papa Hauora Health Precinct.
