Project Spotlight: Rethink Ledgers

When Bart Cant, Founder and Managing Partner of Rethink Ledgers, decided to join CCI, he started to develop a prototype application with the hope to build a solution that could help keep people safe and bring back some normalcy in their daily lives.

The prototype app he built is called “State Surveillance System for Covid19 Testing and Vaccine Distribution Management”. The app was developed using the DAML (Digital Assets Modeling Language) smart contract language and W3C’s verifiable credentials. The app showcases a prototype solution that provides a digital, secure experience for citizens, health clinic providers, and state agencies to share COVID-19 test results, “proof of vaccine” administration, and other “immunity proofs” using a centralized ledger.

DAML guarantees privacy by coding the solution as rights and obligations. The information is stored, so it cannot be accessed unless the party accessing that data has been explicitly configured in the smart contracts to access it. DAML is also one of the few solutions that allows for interoperability and a wide variety of datastores including solutions built on blockchain (e.g., Hyperledger Fabric, Hyperledger Sawtooth), DLT (e.g., Corda), a centralized ledger (e.g., AWS QLDB) or a simple database (e.g., PostgreSQL).

The second major technical component of the solution is how it interacts with verifiable credentials. Verifiable credentials are used to securely transmit COVID-19 test information from the health clinics to the patient. The application provides a digital workflow for this experience (including a mobile experience) while still being HIPAA compliant and providing a safe and secure mechanism for sharing COVID-19 test data that allows the recipient to be in control of his or her data and decide on what to share and with whom.

CCI Governance Framework v2 Draft Ready for Public Review

The Rules and Governance Workstream has now made available a version of the CCI Governance Framework v2.0 for public review. They are looking forward to a range of feedback and commentary which will help them address challenges and requirements originating from practical applications of verifiable credentials and self-sovereign identity to the mitigation of health crisis as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Input and feedback will be reviewed for an initial period of 10 days starting September 29.

The COVID-19 Credentials Initiative (CCI): Bringing Emerging Privacy-Preserving Technology to a Public Health Crisis

Two CCI participants, Kaliya Young (Co-founder of the Internet Identity Workshop) and Lucy Yang (Co-Chair of CCI), made a submission to the Privacy & Pandemics Workshop by the Future of Privacy Forum, sharing their thoughts around some of the key challenges that arose in CCI's efforts to responsibly use new privacy-preserving technologies to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

The purpose of this blog post is for the community to be able to read their submission and continue the discussion.

Use Case Implementation

We had our 17th meeting on September 29, 2020. Two use case implementations were demonstrated to the group.

Chris Were (Verida) presented a decentralized personal-health-data solution that is being piloted in Singapore and North America. The system supports multiple test types including COVID-19 (PCR), cholesterol and others. The Verida datastore is available at an open-source GitHub library.

Freddy Zwanzger (Serostatus) presented the SeroStatus solution, which is built in Germany. It supports COVID-19 tests, immunity tests and vaccinations and stores all data in encrypted form only on a user’s phone. One of its identification methods is based on a photo.

For more information about the demos, please visit our meeting page. Our next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, October 13, 16:00-17:00 CEST, with two demonstrations confirmed.

Coordination & Communications

We hosted the September CCI all-hands call where we updated the community on our conversation with Linux Foundation Public Health and what would be CCI's near-term priorities. If you didn't make it to the call, you can find the recording, slides and chat history on CCI Internal Homepage.

While we continue to engage with Linux Foundation Public Health, we are also reaching out to and reconnecting with other organizations (e.g., W3C CCG, ID2020, etc.) to explore program and operational synergies.

Upcoming Event

Internet Identity Workshop (IIW)

CCI Knowledge Base

This is a collection of resources regarding COVID-19 and verifiable credentials. It is a starting point for a larger database where community members can search for and find information relevant to CCI's work and key stakeholders. We are working to set up a process for all CCI members to contribute to this growing list. Please stayed tuned.
