Today is Lincolnshire Day and the children have been celebrating the day by wearing something yellow and talking about all that is wonderful about our County. Some will have enjoyed a Lincolnshire sausage and shared an interesting fact or two in their classrooms. It is also National Poetry Day which Mrs Dickinson reminded us of yesterday. Perhaps you have a favourite poem which you enjoyed as a child and could now pass on to your children. Two of my favourite poems as a child were "The Owl and the Pussycat" by Edward Lear and "Jabberwocky" by Lewis Carroll. I would find it difficult to choose between them. I do know that reciting these poems bring back very happy memories of my childhood. Time spent reading to your child or sharing poems together is never time wasted. Children benefit enormously from this special time together and it does help their reading skills and builds confidence too. So I would encourage you tonight, or this weekend, to have some fun and share a poem together.
As we approach half term we are thinking about Harvest and how fortunate we are to have enough to eat. We are preparing a harvest song or poem within each class which we hope to share with you. The week before half term, as in previous years, we would like to collect some tins and long life items of food which we will deliver to a local food-bank, on Friday afternoon 16th October. If you would like to support this charity please send in items as suggested below during the week beginning 12th October. Grantham food-bank has completed its 8th year and is very valued by local families in need. There is a YouTube video about the work of the charity which may be of interest. There has been a definite chill in the air this week. It’s not surprising really given that we are now in the season of autumn. Pre-school have been learning in class lots about the 4 seasons, focusing particularly on autumn. They have been carefully observing the changes from summer to autumn taking particular note of the leaves changing colour. During the week the children have done lots of autumn learning, including painting leaf prints, understanding what colours represent autumn and learning why leaves change colour and fall off the trees. The children have also listened to ‘autumn’ from Vivaldi’s 4 seasons and are learning some autumn songs. Lots of autumnal activity!
Mrs Whinney set the children a little challenge for the weekend, seeing what they could find relating to autumn. Look what Aneira and George found! Mrs Whinney said to Aneira that she had never seen such a big conker! George called his autumn finds ‘treasure’.
I think that sums the season of autumn up beautifully when we look around and see the beauty of the season.
In Reception the children have had another lovely week. They have been continuing their work on different 2D shapes and have also had a go at continuing some repeating patterns. Some of these patterns were a bit tricky so the children really had to concentrate. The children used a mixture of lovely ways to illustrate this learning; making beaded necklaces, using peg boards, linking coloured chain links, unifix cubes and also completing some fabulous vegetable and fruit printing.
Once again the children have enjoyed some fun physical activities, with the focus this week on ball skills and team work. The children were playing team games and practising rolling, catching and throwing the ball to a partner. It was great to see such enthusiasm. Keep it up Reception!
This week, as always, Class One have been having lots of fun whilst achieving lots of learning! There has been a cornucopia of activities and investigations taking place. In Geography, the children have been considering where Earth fits in as part of the solar system...and where in the World we live. The children are beginning to use Infant Atlases confidently and the challenge this week was to find a country for each of their initials. Everyone was successful at locating place names including Denmark, Canada, England and France. Numeracy this week has involved looking at coins with the highest and lowest value and ordering them correctly. We all decided that the £2 coin is our favourite. Some of the children have been exploring number bonds in conjunction with magnetism; finding out which items in the classroom are magnetic and making colourful sums on those surfaces. In Literacy, the children have been rearranging sentences to make sense of the vocabulary and adding the necessary full stops and capital letters. The Class One and Two 'bubble' enjoyed watching The Big Anti-Bullying Assembly and are determined to keep our school a happy, safe place for everyone. Another fabulous week. Top marks everyone.
The children of Class Two have really enjoyed their RE lessons this year. At the moment they are looking at examples of kindness in a number of Bible stories, such as The Good Samaritan. They have also put a lot of thought and discussion concerning 'The Golden Rule' and what that means.
All the children agree that you must: 'Treat others the way you want to be treated' in order to live a kind and virtuous life. They have all produced some super pieces of work and I am very impressed with their efforts. We certainly had a great deal of examples of times when it is difficult to follow the Golden Rule, but we always have to try our best.
This half term the children have been using Swift Playgrounds on the IPads to develop their coding skills. This app makes learning coding and writing algorithms interactive and fun. It requires no previous coding knowledge, so it’s perfect for those just starting out. It begins with the fundamentals of coding, and each child tackles their own goals using the same code professional developers use every day. As they move along, more advanced concepts come into play. The children continually build on what they have learnt and create even more complex code.
Students have been producing some lovely Autumnal paintings. They have practised their scissor skills, cutting out 5 different leaf shapes, Maple, Oak, Holly, Ivy and Elm. This linked nicely with work done in their previous STEAM lesson, where students identified different leaves/trees from the school field.
Using these leaf templates students mixed paints dabbing and blending them to create many different Autumnal colours from golds, maroons, oranges through to browns and mustards.
This week Class 4 completed their first science topic of the new term: ‘Living Things and their Habitats’. They have worked exceptionally hard and finished off the topic by taking the end of topic test. It is with great pleasure that all the children passed with flying colours showing what capable scientists they are! Keep up the amazing work Class 4.
This week Class 5 have completed some amazing work in English. They started by learning about the life-cycle of a platypus before turning it into an explanation text. The children drafted their work before becoming critiques and editing and evaluating their own work and that of their peers.
This critiquing stage is the most vital part of the writing process as it allows the children a chance to make changes and improve their work whilst looking what their peers have completed and to magpie any good ideas.
The children then re wrote their work in neat before adding illustrations, I hope you will agree the proof is clearly visible in the finished work.
This week as part of anti-bullying week years 5 and 6 took a pledge to stand against bullying and make sure they looked out for one another as part of our school community.
The weather has certainly changed this week. It is colder, more blustery (in the words of Winnie the Pooh) and I have noticed that the leaves are starting to change colour. It can only mean one thing - it must be Autumn.
We have had another exciting busy week in Year 6. I hear lots of fantastic music happening, amazing ice cream artworks are under development and we have been talking about how life was different during World War 2; including there not being any supermarkets.
This week is also anti-bullying week and we have chatted at length about how to be a friend, how to support others and watched a video with Class 5 about other people's experiences. This has also neatly linked to our English work on Michael Morpurgo's novel 'Friend or Foe?'
It is also Lincolnshire Day AND National Poetry Day today - so we have made the most of the opportunity to be creative in our writing. They have only just started, so I will share the end products next week.
Learning vocabulary in English is very important for little kids. The more words they know, the easier it becomes for them to understand what they hear. We usually begin by learning common vocabulary words that they tend to repeat and hear continuously, such as school supplies.
On this occasion, students made associations by matching the picture of the school supply with their names. Then they need to guess the objects. This activity encourages students to review vocabulary words and also learn new ones. Plus, they have a lot of fun while learning.

Hallo Von Der Deutschklasse!
The German students settled well into the new routine and found the way to interact in a “COVID safe” way and to respect all guidelines.
The Grade 6 students found the way to introduce themselves and say “nice to meet you” shaking hands in the air from a distance and played bingo with self-created bingo cards in order to practice numbers.
The Grade 8 students translated the COVID guidelines into German and found out that the same rules apply also in schools in Germany.
Grade 7 students instead are learning about the weather and will soon present the weather forecast of a city of their choice.
Offstage Drama has resumed their Saturday drama workshops.

10.30 am - 11.30 am - Secondary aged children
We ensure that children are spaced out, the hall is well-ventilated and that good hand hygiene is adhered to. We have contact details for all of the families, so that if there are any concerns, these can be shared quickly. This is subject, of course, to any further updates from the Government nearer the time.
