October 2020 BYSC Bow Watch

Sailing, Steaks, Sunset Soirees: Things Are Falling Into Place

The summer none of us predicted — the one that disappointed everyone once it was here — is over. And now we're cautiously stepping into fall, our seasonal hopes and dreams once again fueled by gently cooling breezes.

While we can't say with certainty how the weeks and months to come will unfold, the team at the BYSC is determined to infuse a little fun into this unusual October.

In her Commodore's Report, Trish Gamble explains we are slowly (and safely) increasing activities around the club, even though we have not officially reopened the clubhouse.

Many of our regular activities are back on the schedule, and Activities Director Danielle Feerst is updating the calendar with some new ones.

Right now, members are enjoying the return of the Fall Club Series Regattas (check the Dinghy Series results here), the Monthly Music Jam on the third Wednesday of each month, and pickleball on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.

We're going to have another Steak Night Lite on Wednesday, Oct. 14. Buy your tickets here.

And — drum roll, please — the Board has decided to resume Sunset Fridays, so our members can enjoy this fall weather while physically distanced on the back deck. Read more.

Thank you to all who are leading or volunteering with our Fall Maintenance Projects. The club will look fantastic, especially after completing the bulkhead project (for which we're currently awaiting state approvals.)

Our fall member's meeting will start at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, on the back deck. The rain date is Friday, Oct. 30.

Friday, Oct. 30, is also the day for our Light the Night contest featuring handmade jack-o-lanterns. Enter the competition and then bring your creation to the yacht club by 6 p.m. Friday the 30th.

Dress in costume — kids too! — and walk the spooky grounds. We will award prizes for everything from the most creative to the most likely to elicit a scream.

The more jack-o-lanterns, the scarier. Look for more information soon. And email ad@byscnet.com to enter the carving contest.

Now, let's talk about sailing.

  • There will be an Adult Learn to Sail Sunfish Clinic running two consecutive Saturdays, Oct. 3 and Oct. 10. BYSC Members can participate in the sailing course with Danielle and BCSB Board Member Gordon Sproul. They will be using the sunfish fleet owned by the yacht club to learn to sail. SIGN UP NOW because spots are limited.
  • All BYSC and BCSB sailors who want to have fun racing one night can join our Wednesday night open sailing session. Don't want to get on the water? Please volunteer to help with coaching and running races.
  • Our Fall Optis Program, designed for ages 8 to 13,  runs Mondays from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m through Oct. 26.
  • And Peter Gamble and Chris Hooganboom are advancing the skills and education of our high school sailors. For more information, contact Danielle at ad@byscnet.com.

The Ladies Who (Don't) Lounge group is continuing to generate a lot of interest. New mom Carissa Cahill led our first Zumba class on Tuesday. The next class will be Tuesday, Oct. 27. Zumba is free, but please register!

You can keep up to date with the group on a new page on our website. It's still a work in progress, but it's off to a good start.

The group meets on the third Tuesday of the month, which means the next one will start at 5 p.m. Oct. 20. BYSC member Bonita Wreden, a fitness trainer (as well as a piano and violin teacher), will speak about Fitness and Aging. Look for updates on the club calendar.

Now go enjoy something pumpkin spice. Just don't look for canned pumpkin because it's apparently not to be found this year.
