OCTOBER 2020

FROM THE TEAM LEADER

Dear AE friends and supporters,

I hope this letter finds you and your loved ones well. We would love to hear from you, so feel free to contact us.
Besides reaching out with food relief, this season has forced us to adapt our methods of evangelism, and engage in the digital space, which I believe will remain a key component of ministry even once we are able to meet in-person as we used to before lockdown.

Although our methods may change, the message of the Gospel remains the same, necessitated by human need and God’s immutable nature. Hebrews 13:8 (NKJV) says “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever”, and we bless the Lord for this wonderful truth, that in an ever-changing world, we have a Rock to hold on to, One that we can depend on. If you are feeling somewhat shaken at this time, remember that Jesus is your sure foundation, on which you can rebuild your life.

"Therefore the Lord God said: “Look, I have laid a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation; the one who believes will be unshakable."

Isaiah 28:16 (HCSB)

In our news below, we share about a wonderful time of ministry in Hilton, the Foxfire Team resuming outdoor adventures, an update from my beautiful wife Charlene and her legacy work, as well as some news from The Centre...enjoy!

We thank you for your partnership, and please do continue to support us through your prayers and finances in these difficult times. We are truly honoured by your sacrificial giving.

May the Lord bless you and refresh you!

MISSION NEWS

LEAVE EM’ BE OR HBE? That is the question!

AESA partnered with Churches in Hilton, a small town on the northern escarpment of Pietermaritzburg, to launch a live streaming of a trailblazing Home Based Evangelism (HBE) Outreach on Sunday, 06th September 2020 at 17:00 (CAT).
AESA’s Sazi Ngcobo shared a fun-filled children’s message, “scavenger hunt”.
AESA Board member, Deborah Kirsten, and her husband, former Protea and international cricketing coach Gary Kirsten, each shared pre-recorded testimonies.
Former ‘Hiltonite’ Debbie, shared on being rooted in Christ through her life-journey, encouraging people of whatever age and in whatever stage and season of their life to be rooted in Jesus.
Gary shared on how God became real and ‘visible’ to him in the height of a cricketing slump which threatened his international career.
Beleaguered by poor form, the media baying for his axing, on the back of yet another failed performance that all but guaranteed the end, Gary had helplessly surrendered all control to the Lord the night before taking to the crease for his second batting spell in the 1999 Test match in Durban. Head down, literally and figuratively, he interspersed many a near thing with a few unexpectedly good shots and at the end of it all found himself leaving the field fourteen hours later with 275 runs to his name. “That was the day that God became absolutely and tangibly real to me” says Gary, “the more you relinquish to Him the more He will reveal. Give of your best every day and God will sort out the rest!”
AESA Team Leader, Theuns Pauw, calling on an individual response to ‘who do you say Jesus is’? Legend, Liar, Lunatic or just who He says He is, Lord, and Saviour of the world.
A WhatsApp contact number and QR codes were provided for those who wished to commit their lives and accept Jesus as Lord and Saviour, and for those in need of prayer, or who may have questions.

A recorded version of the Outreach was posted on AESA’s Facebook page and is still available for viewing.
The Outreach received 157 live views; and the recording of the outreach a further 1330 views, but we thank God that the Good News reached further than that, with many people having watched the outreach together (only counting as one view).

A testimony from a Pastor emanating from the Outreach:
A year on from having given his life to Jesus but hardly ever attending church, Glen found himself faced with financial challenges that were impacting on his marriage. Prompted by his search for answers yet again, he participated in the HBE Outreach which led to prayerful discussion, ministry and a re-commitment from both Glen and his wife.

Feedback from outside of South Africa:
AESA would love to partner with your church to spread the Good News in your community and beyond. We encourage you to contact Gary Almeida – galmeida@ae.org.za for further information and assistance with implementation of HBE.

FOXFIRE NEWS

Praise be to God for every glorious day that He gives us to live. The restrictions on Covid-19 alert levels have seriously hampered our ministry however we are thankful to God that they are being lifted. As a result we have been able to re-commence our ministry out in the fields and it has been such a great joy that our first audience was young kids. Jesus said, “let the little ones come to me for the kingdom of God is theirs” (Matthew 19:14).  We also have come to realize that most of these children are not given the attention and development they need to build their relationship with God. It is unusual for kids to listen attentively and ask for resources to read about God, this is sign of interest and wanting to learn more. This is something we are grateful for because the seed that is being planted will grow and will bear fruit in the communities in which they live.
As we continue sharing the Gospel, we ourselves need to be ever aware that the aim and intention of our ministry is to plant the seed even though we may not always see the result of the work that is being done. Our task is planting the seed; God will continue the good work that He has started.
Applications for 2021 are open!!! Please assist us by intentionally sharing this recruitment notice with youth who may join the team next year.
We thank all our donors and sponsors once again for all the support that we receive in all its forms to ensure that this ministry continues.
Regards

LEGACY NEWS

The Legacy department has had a very productive time over the past few weeks. Robyn Gruijters, who recently joined our team as a consultant, has really helped us gain momentum and direction. Initially all we had was a big picture of what we would like to build the Legacy Project into; Robyn has now helped us to map out and walk through the course.  She has also compiled all the formal documentation that govern archives.

The Foxfire team, whose outreach ministry is restricted as a result of COVID regulations, has been fantastic in helping with the physical archive two mornings a week. It has been great to work along such an energetic team of young people and I think they have found the work fascinating. Together we have re-organized the shelving and boxes and started implementing an accessioning system.

The editing of our documentary, which has been a long and challenging process, is now in the home-straight! I recently traveled down to Cape Town for a few very constructive days, to work through some archive material and discuss production with Frans Cronje. God has been so faithful throughout this project, and we are very excited to have it released soon.

Michael has faced various health challenges in the past few weeks. First being admitted to hospital for almost a week having been diagnosed with pneumonia. We praise God that he has recovered well from that. He then had investigative surgery on his head, forehead & back. The former two were not cancerous, but his back has a nasty Squamous Carcinoma which is not aggressive but requires Michael to go to hospital for daily radium treatment for the next six weeks.

Michael has almost completed his new book, “Deep waters of the Disciple.” He and Carol have also enjoyed breaking out of lockdown a little as their daughter Debbie and grand-daughter Josie came for a visit prior to his birthday; his son Martin, daughter-in-law Sam and their children visited for the long weekend over Michael’s birthday (picture below).
For those of you who have not as yet obtained a copy of Michael’s memoirs Footprints in the African Sand, please order one from us. Also keep it in mind as a gift for the upcoming Christmas season. It is a truly enriching and faith-building work.

We covet and appreciate your ongoing prayers and support,

Blessings in Christ,

Charlene Pauw

CENTRE NEWS

“Spring has sprung and the grass has riz…”

The dawning of Spring brings with it an explosion of colour here at AE.  Our beautiful lawns have (seemingly overnight) morphed into a lush green carpet, and flower buds and baby leaves adorn the surrounding trees.

The Centre too is entering a new season as we embark on some new and exciting ventures.

Our amazing men are digging (and digging, and digging) so that we can once again enjoy our natural pool. Imagine being able to swim in the refreshingly cool waters of the natural spring.
We have launched our comprehensive Team Building programmes after months of planning; and have so much to offer by way of Christian Leadership programmes as well as fun-filled and competitive corporate events.

Our group bookings are slowly filtering in as the world cautiously ventures out and tries to get back to life as “normal”.  We are so grateful to our regular groups like WDB Trust who have continued to support us through ebb and flow.

If one looks hard enough, one can almost always see a silver lining in every circumstance, especially this most unusual one. For us, this Lockdown ‘down-time’ has afforded us the opportunity to fix, paint, tidy and clean. In addition we have been able to re-focus, recognizing where we are and envisioning where we want to be.  To this end we have drawn up a wish list, including things like a jungle gym, a trampoline, proper stands for the archery targets, new conference chairs and tables, to name but a few things.

We appeal to you therefore that whenever you consider donating, please think of us.

Blessings,
