Annual Clean Sweep returns Fall 2020

NIAGARA FALLS, ON - The Park in the City Committee hosts their annual Fall Clean Sweep on Saturday, October 17, with special COVID-19 precautions in place. Volunteers will help the Committee collect litter and clear debris from public parks, trails, walkways and main street boulevards in a new, self-directed format.

This year, instead of the usual large gatherings of volunteers at the start and end of the event, volunteers will participate individually or in small groups with members of their household, in keeping with Provincial orders. Volunteers may choose their own location or inquire about areas in need of extra attention. There is no set start or end time, but the event is limited to daylight hours. After the event, City crews will be dispatched to collect the filled bags from the Clean Sweep sites.

"The safety of our volunteers and community is our top priority," says Kathy Moldenhauer, Director of Recreation and Culture. "Most of our volunteers have participated in past events, but we expect everyone who takes part will find it easy to follow the simple, new precautions and format. Clean Sweep is always a great community event and a great way for students to acquire community service hours. Even if participation numbers are lower this year, we hope to see lots of candid photos and videos documenting the event, promoting environmental stewardship, civic pride—and good physical distancing."

As always, volunteers are expected to use common sense and caution. They will be provided with protective gloves and garbage/recycling bags and are encouraged to bring their own pickers and safety vests or wear brightly coloured clothing. Special instructions to avoid large objects, broken glass, and possible contaminants are posted online and will be reiterated before the event. This year, the list includes discarded masks and gloves. The City asks volunteers to note the location of these items and notify the City for safe collection and disposal.

P
rotective gloves and garbage/recycling bags will be provided to registered volunteers only, from October 13 to 16 at the MyCity Customer Service office located within the MacBain Community Centre.

Everyone is invited to follow the event online using #cleansweep on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Those interested in volunteering can learn more and register for the event until Friday, October 16th at niagarafalls.ca/cleansweep
