Today we honor the life of Donald M. Kendall, the former CEO of PepsiCo and the founder of the renowned sculpture gardens which bear his name.
Kendall was a friend and a true patron of the arts. In 1983, he took a risk on a young artist and commissioned Passage, a 16 x 25 foot sculpture carved from a 450 ton block of Italian travertine. He inspired and pushed Richard to go beyond where he had ever been in his work. The fearlessness Kendall instilled has endured for the last 35 years of Richard’s career, pushing the boundaries of stone, continually taking great risks.
Richard says of Kendall, “he was the most influential person in my adult life. He truly believed in the importance of art; he was utterly humble; and he had the biggest, most caring heart of anyone I've ever known. I have always been in awe of his character and charisma, the way he carried himself and treated others in this world, always with the utmost respect.”
